Large site promotion -- can you give suggestions on best strategy?

My platform is in a big industry, competing against multi-billion dollar companies.

But we have a great new take on how to provide better services. And if executed properly, we'll be on top in 5 years. Yes, strictly a home run play.

The site has been running for almost one year.

We have 50K users. We have 250K indexable pages (almost 100K indexed in Google).

We have almost 70,000 keywords that we need to rank for, very long tail. We have a list of 50 broader keywords that appear in the long tail searches.

What is your suggestion on a link-building strategy? Given that our competition has millions of backlinks already, how do we catch up without hitting sandbox issues?

About how many links do we need to build for each of the long tail keywords?

Should we build the broad keywords first because that will help us to rank for the long tail?

Looking forward to hearing your expert opinions.
