Our plan to have Hubby retire/leave the rat race - at 40.

I posted about this in the asylum (otherwise known as the OT Forum) before posting here for feedback. (Not sure what that says about me, but anyway...LOL)

My hubby is 40 years old. He is a disabled vet, and he has health issues.

We had originally decided that he would "retire" (i.e. leave his j-o-b, come home and work with me) in December of 2009.

Due to several issues (health being one), he wants to retire/quit in June of 2009 - six months early.

So, I made a deal with him. He can retire anytime after the following are true:
  1. We are debt-free. House, cars, everything.
  2. We have 6 months' worth of expenses in savings.
  3. I have had an increase in income for at least 3 months in a row.
These are the conditions that would make me feel secure enough to have only one income. The target date is June 1st, 2009.

Now, in order to make this happen, I have done the following:
  1. I have arranged for one-on-one mentoring/coaching from someone on the "next level" who can help me make the leap into a 6-figure income. Why? Because it is worth it for me to learn from someone else's experience.
  2. I have created a business plan - breaking everything down by the numbers.
  3. I have developed a passive income strategy - yes, I make money from writing, but I want to have more passive income streams.
  4. I have gotten input from Hubby and we are figuring out what his role will be in the future with our business.
  5. We have scheduled "test days" - days where he will take leave and we will work on how our daily schedule will be once he retires. We have scheduled at least 1 or 2 each month.
  6. I am already involving him in some aspects of the business - mostly research at this point.
  7. Dreambuilding - we discuss our ideal lifestyle and visualize our future. We have visited new homes to dream, as well.
  8. Insurance - we are already investigating health insurance options for our family.
That is the start. I am sure I will add to it.

Hope this helps someone.

    Shay,

How do the kids factor into all of this?

Are there any potential plusses (can any of them do IM for you) ?

    Are there any potential pitfalls?

Putting the kids to work. That is great.

      Thanks for the questions!

Right now, the kids are a little young to help, except maybe the oldest.

The only real drawback I see is that Hubby might get bored, but I plan to keep him busy.

        Hi Shay,

Our plan to have Hubby retire/leave the rat race - at 40.
Best of luck to you and hubby - anyone can be an ExRat

PS This ExRat is nearly 40 as well.

        Hi Nato,
Putting the kids to work. That is great.
Lol. There's no point having them if you're not going to get a decent ROI

Tell your husband thanks for his service to our Country - I too am a Vet!

Sounds like you have a great plan in place, which IMO is the most important part.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing more about your success as you travel this path.

            Shay,

I think your plan is outstanding! I mean, the numbered points you made, not just your goal. Yes, there are a lot of details that need to be worked out, but it sounds like you have a solid, reliable plan. Good for you!

            I'm pulling for you!

You've already come so far in such a short time I bet you'll hit all of your goals before the deadline you've set.

You have a very realistic and achievable plan and I'm looking forward to updates. I'm sure that your success will inspire a lot of the newbies to follow in your footsteps.

This is one gal who we're going to hear a lot more about, simply because she believes in herself.

Notice she's set herself achievable goals, (I bet you hit them all before the deadline Shay).

Iv'e said it before and I'll say it again, you're an inspiration to all those "Newbies" out there

    Cheers

    Shay, what a great plan!

I'm pretty quiet around here but I've seen you in the past few months really take the bull by the horns and go for it. It's really encouraging to read how well you're doing and the positive goals you're setting for yourself and your family.

I was actually thinking last night (up late/early with feverish four year old) that I need to set up a business plan and stick with it. Too much bouncing around all these years.

So thank you for this post. You've helped kick me back into gear!

      Thanks, Jen!

I have a 4 year old, too (also a 15, 12 and 10 year old) - I know what it is like. Hope he/she is better today!

I read an awful lot when I first came here, and then I jumped in.

There is so much great info here!

      Good luck!
