Where To Go To Get Software Built

I want to get some SEO software built and wondering from experience where would be the best place to go?

I understand I will need to give a very specific blueprint and I do know the basics in software design anyway so this will help in describing how I want things to work.

oDesk? Specialized software dev group?

Looking for thoughts from people who have done this before.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi dave, oDesk would be the cheapest option to go for
on the other hand, Elance is known for both professionalism and affordable pricing
I have posted a job on oDesk a long time back about a php script (a small application to automate things) however, i didn't have luck finding the right person.

Hiring a freelancer is sometimes a tedious & time consuming process,
specially when you are new to this business.

      Thanks,

I have a lot of experience in outsourcing and hiring through oDesk to automate things, and they seem pretty good on the whole. But it can be quite tedious. I'd imagine Elance would be similar. I just haven't hired software developers before..

I guess if anyone can recommend a dedicated software developer site where the applicants have undergone at least some basic training before I hire them lol!

      Thanks,

I guess both oDesk & Elance gives you access to the profile of contractor, where in you can poke into various areas including the tests the contractor has undergone.

Correct me if i am wrong?

It`s a headache with outsourcing for software development... If you`re not too technical yourself, you can never rely on its security or know how to really test it...

I tried to get a software built by others and spent over 8 months (and a bunch of money too!) without getting anything. They always complain about the project scope not being clear enough (being in the middle of the development!), and if they get something delivered, you cannot really use it... You need to get involved in it yourself at the highest level possible. I ended up creating what I need myself.

That`s my experience of course, would like to know how other people do.

  • I generally use vWorker for software.

Make sure your spec is really clear, and you put some clause in that it's the coder responsibility to find out your requirements.

I'd also work with single coders in preference to companies, who are much more likely to try and add additional costs on midway through the project.

Finally, don't be afraid to reject the project if it runs out of the timescale you set. That's why the deadline is there (to protect your money, and so you can find an alternative coder if they do not deliver).
