So porn will now be www.THESITE.xxx <-- they have there own TLD

Hey guys,

Have you heard about this?

Porn is getting there own TLD it will be .xxx

I heard through the grapevine, yet to do some research on the subject yet, but it is real interesting how the registars are pushing new TLDs into the mix, or at least calimed to be TLDs.

I think this is a good one though. Makes sense at least.

Yes this has been under discussion for months now and already over 10,000 domain names with the .xxx extension have been registered. If you have about $80 you can register your own too.

True, but I think other keyword domains within the .xxx will be worth much more, focusing around certain sexual pleasures/activities or ethnic groups that are popular, for example Asian.xxx - wish I had that domain name.

This tld will be no different than all the others. During the sunrise phase, the one word valuable domains, like sex.xxx and porn.xxx and Asian.xxx and MILF.xxx and well, you get the idea ... those will be sold for thousands. Then the registry will be open to the general public to pick up the rest.

Yeah it's unfortunate really that other people, individuals aren't able to cash in on these one word domain names, a little inethical but then again what would be ethical about the invidual with the biggest wallet being able to get the domains first either.

Also just if anyone wants more information on this .xxx launch you can read here:

What does government have to do with it? Porn isn't illegal unless it's child porn or snuff porn, etc.

People can already filter out porn. Porn will always be found by those who want to find porn.

I'm not sure I have this right or how badly I'm butchering the actual stats but I heard very recently, porn makes up something like 15% of the internet.

Either way, that's a heck of a lot of censoring and filtering.

I first heard about the .xxx extension years ago (like 2005) and nothing ever came from it. Now upon doing a quick search, it appears it was approved last year in June.

The official site to register .xxx domains is: ICM Registry - Sponsored Voluntary Adult TLD Application

It looks like they are letting people reserve domains, but not actually buy them yet.

Yeah, this has been talked about for a while. It's going to be very expensive for everyone in the adult business. That said, it's not a requirement for an adult company to pick up an xxx domain, although it's a necessity for certain brands (for obvious reasons.)
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3734295].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author TSDMike
I heard about this a few weeks back. Word was that the majority of the online adult industry was against this - this essentially allows any censorship group (read: government agency) or ISP to much more effectively restrict content. This also applies to simple content filters installed by say employers for example. They can ban one TLD without really having to be concerned with inadvertently squeezing out any legit sites.

That said, if you have a site about basket weaving on a .xxx domain, you're probably an idiot anyway

I don't feel up to actually building a porn website, but I did get an exact match domain for a keyword that receives 20,000,000+ EXACT searches per month.

Just thought I'd share that incase anyone is ever interested in buying it. I was on the list the first day they came out and took up a few domains that can be brandable + extremely searchable.

P.S. The website does relate to XXX, it's not some random niche.

Haha. I'm not really worried that much about a "sales pitch". I'm not a salesman, nor do I want to be. I just wanted to share my experiences.

If someone wants to work in the porn industry, that's there thing. I'm just not going to be apart of it as a whole.

But a post like this is very unlikely to come back to haunt me. I would likely sell the site on Flippa or contact certain websites relating to a sale and it would be private.

Anyhow, thanks for the feedback. I didn't take into consideration that I may be insulting someone, but it was just my opinion.

I've always thought anyone who is interested in making money online should have decent "sale pitch" skills. You don't necessarily have to be a salesman.

You mention you want to sell it on Flippa. Well, guess what? You will need some sort of sale pitch to convince people to buy it. Saying the wrong things (like you did above) can easily make potential buyers move on. That's how it's been from my experience on Flippa anyway.

          Good luck

I know how it all works. I just don't really focus on "sales pitches".

I used to go up to people on the streets trying to sell art, over and over, pitch after pitch. I'd make a sale every now and then, but overall, it just wasn't my thing.

Seeing as I've done pretty well for just being honest with people and sharing my thoughts, I feel I'll be just fine.

As for the domain on Flippa, I have sold domains on Flippa and understand the process. I don't do the whole pitching thing either. I just share the statistics, tell people what I think, explain why I'm selling it, and voila.

I'm not afraid of failure, but I'm not going to push something on someone that doesn't need something.

If someone wants the domain, they'll get it

Does anyone still pay for porn???

$80 seems like a waste to me. But then I'm not in the online porn industry
so I have no idea about conversion rates but from what I've heard there
are a few websites that dominate the online porn industry such as redtube.com
and pornhub.com which give away so much free content that they're almost
    impossible to compete against.

So even if you had sex.xxx you would still have to try and monetize it and
compete with the authority sites that dominate the online porn industry.

This seems to me like just another way for registrars to cash in on the
porn industry without actually having to get into the "dirty" market themselves.

In a years time .xxx will probably go down from $80 to $1.99

    Will

The point is getting in right from the beginning, just incase it is huge.

But as for the domain, domains don't have to be monetized in order to make money.

I have had domains that weren't even built sell for $250 just because people wanted the domain name.

Sure you could flip the domains if you can find someone to buy them
but from a buyers point of view i.e a website developer it's not going to
be easy to monetize in this market that is overcrowded and has some huge players
        in it.

I've done research before and I've heard of people getting tens of
thousands of visitors per day and making nothing.

But seeing as there's been over 10,000 domains registered already
it shows that there are people interested in these domains so you will
probably find some buyers for your new xxx domains so good luck!

From what i hear its like this. There was two waves of realeases. the second wave is as follows.

You pay your 80 bucks, but you dont automatically get that domain. If someone else pays the 80 and the domain was not registered in the first wave, it gos to private auction between those who payed the 80 dollars. There was a massive misconception about this and the registrar actually posted that on GFY.com

Personally I think it is an excellent idea to launch a .XXX extension - as I look on I can see that the internet is simply becomming more organized, which is great: I love organization!

There have been some other threads where Warrior's have expressed their dislike, claiming that it is censorship - but seriously, I am all for the extension and was sold when I read James Sides comment near the top of this thread:

"This is awesome! For anyone who has ever typed in the wrong web address with family around..."

My personal stance on this: 1) How is forcing adult content websites to have a .XXX extension censorship?? And does this mean that putting adult content magazines on the top shelf is censorship too?? - and - 2) To me, I can only see that the internet is becomming a more organized place, which I think is excellent.

No, it won't be. The ".xxx" is just one more TLD which is intended for those who believe it will work for them better (e.g. ".info", ".ws" etc)

Personally I believe it will never be more popular than old good ".com"

Also don't forget, that ICANN is going to make it possible to register your own TLD's soon. For example, there will be ".porn", ".sex", ".money", and anything else. The ".xxx" one will just get lost among of them.

As about the .xxx TLD, so very soon it will be dumped by various .sex, .porn, .adult, .hardcore, and others.

My personal opinion is it will be like in the early 2000's that I heard everywhere, even on radio spots "reserve your .tv domain now before they run out, its going to be bigger than .com" sure good luck with that.

Maybe everyone in here knows about the web and how it works but for the other 90% of people who just know how to turn on a computer and open a browser to check out a .xxx might not be so appealing as just typing what they are used to (.com at the end). im not to sure it will catch on.
