How do you monetize this site?

Guys & Girls,

After days and nights of work, I am ready to launch my site which is entirely different to IM niche. This is actually the 5-6 billion dollar niche and I should say it is unpolluted. This is the Microsoft's most profitable software till date. Even it surpass the revenue of MS office (which sells 1 copy for every 6 seconds).

Little bit background about my site. sharepoint news is a DiGG like site for people in the sharepoint technology (Microsoft content management system for corporates). I can say this works like book-marking site as well. I used an open source code for this to build. It is free to download. There were thousands of downloads for this software but only handful of implementations. Programmers and developers through out the world are struggling to understand this code and baffled by the difficulties to put up a site due to the poor documentation. As we always heard from everybody in the IM, go to the problem and give a solution instead of creating a product that no need for the market. I realised there is a huge potential here to make money by giving away freebie here so that I can build some serious list.

I am going to take this to the next level with all the strategies that I am learning from my IM experience. In the front end, there are 10 videos that I am giving away for free (using a squeeze page) for people who can watch me and copy, so they will be up and running with similar kind of website with in no-time in any niche.

The name of the free video product is "Build your online empire with a tenner ($6.99 for domain and $3.99 for hosting) yes, I know I have to work on my copy writing skills but I will work on that later.

In the backend, with a paid product (not yet figured it out what to include). I am planning to show them, how they can profit from this site that they just build. I am planning to show them, how they can get sponsored ads, banners or associations, flipping sites, traffic generation, SEO etc etc. But I haven't figured it out for myself how to do that. So I thought you guys can help me to brain storm some monetization ideas.

I am not sure, how I can monetize this site. How to approach companies to sponsor me or asking for a banner or something like that. There are millions of companies are advertising with the big brother (Google). Whom to approach, how to approach, what to tell, how can I convince them that this is going to be the next big thing in this niche. Please tell me what to write in the emails.

Which strategy you think will work

Build a credible site first by driving qualified traffic then show statistics so that it will be appealing to the sponsoring companies

(OR)

Tell them (and convince them) that this is the new big thing and it will work and ask them to be a part of it now.

Last and final, shell I release my free product (10 videos) without having my paid product ready yet?

I know I have asked many questions here. But please pardon me and explain your strategy if you were the owner of this site.

Your comments are much much appreciated! Thanks.

Nothing offence here. I valued your time and for your time well spend on this, the best answer will be given a token of honour of some beer money worth $5 via paypal. Please don't think me wrong but I want some serious answers so please don't get offended by this offer. Thanking you all.

Cheers..

You need some advertising on the left side or between those post/previews, looks like you go blind with ads on the right side. Sorry can't help you with the venture capitalism part.

I was referring to this comment:

Thought you were asking for money to sponsor the site. You could use affiliate marketing, website forums or forums like this to find people wanting to advertise or exchange links. Use fivr.com to hire someone to post reviews about it.

I think you have enough ads/widgets, if anything it is a bit busy for my taste. Maybe think about putting your content in the middle and moving one row of ads\widgets to the left side.

Thanks Adam. I think I will have to do this.

Well, no offense, but the site is so busy I want to leave as soon as I land there.

I'm a bit confused here - are you trying to monetize the sharepoint site or launch a new one?

SharePoint is an absolute beast and TOTALLY not understood. If you're focusing on that, consider a to the point, hard hitting "get rolling with SharePoint" video series.

    You mention videos but said:
"Build your online empire with a tenner"

I'm not sure how building an online empire relates to a corporate IT dude struggling with SharePoint installation, configuration, database management and licensing.

    Can you clarify please?

      Thanks for your comments Gary.

Even though this is a sharepoint community site, it was built upon using an asp.net code which is opensource free to download. I am giving away videos that showing the making of this site from start to finish. So that any one can download that free open source code and start a site like this in any niche by just following those videos. In a nutshell I am showing them the 'making of SharePoint sidekick site'

Got it? Please let me know if it is not clarify enough to understand. I will try again.

My sincere thanks to your suggestions.

      Cheers..

        OK, now it's clicking.

So my question is this then... what are your target markets?

I would think that sales would be slow from that specific site for your product, because those are sharepoint admins, not primarily entrepreneurs looking to build their online empire. Yes, there's some cross-over from I.T. to online stuff, but that's not where your main site is targeted, so your "qualified eyeballs" would be low.

        Here's two ideas:

        1) Make videos on sharepoint and how to easily set it up and manage it. How to license it and when you need the standard vs the enterprise client versions/CALs etc. Show the gotchas (can't change from MSDE to full SQL, etc). Explain the overall structure and what can be "done" with sharepoint (the "why you need it" stuff), etc - put THAT on your main site.

        2) Build a product like you are describing, target it to ASP.net newbies. Showcase your site and if possible revenue earnings from it. Show them how easy it is to build and where to find resources. Advertise it on asp.net sites (may of the script sites will let you list free - start there). Offer add-on products that are next levels of training, private training and pre-built modules they can use.

        Hope that helps!

    Finding the balance:

#1: Don't add so many ads to your website. The first thing that
comes to my mind is "Hit the exit button!".

#2: Get rid of the dates, user that posted the post and what-not.
There is no point in displaying any of that as your reader simply doesn't
    care.

Monetizing the site is one thing, but if you start having ad-overload, then
surely no-one will be clicking your ads as no-one will be on your website.

I don't intend for this information to be harsh, but just think from a visitor's
    perspective.

  • "Build your online empire with a tenner"

My question here would be what is a tenner?

Anyways The header is nice, but yeah there are too many graphics jumping at you everywhere. I would really cut back on some of those graphics.

      I mean with ten dollars.

      1) You buy the domain
      2) You watch my videos and build a site.
      3) Host your site

      Now what?
Make money? How? that's why I started this thread.

Thanks for your comments. Honestly, I thought of letting in some more adverts there. But it seems people are not happy with current load. Points noted.

So, let me get this right. Your going to show people how they can profit from a site like you built, yet, you dont know how to profit from a site like you built? Did I get that right? Because if so...I'm going to lmfao all the way to bed!

IF you think you have an alternative to wordpress. You need to figure out why it is better than wordpress (if at all). That will give you a hint as to why people might want it. I say might because for bloggers wordpress is like bread and butter now..

It is nothing to do with Wordpress. I am big fan of WP. It is a digg like site where people can read the articles posted by the bloggers and say their opinion by shouting it. This process called as "Shout It" or "Kick It"

Yes, I am going to make money and I will show you all how you can make money as well. There is another programming language called c# from Microsoft which is more popular than PHP and there are 50 million professionals all together when you combine SharePoint and Asp.net.

There is a php script which does the same called pligg. People making the ugly sites with that script and flipping for $500 - $5000 without any traffic.

I have an iPhone app and android app so if I flip, I easily beat everyone in the flippa. The idea of having a site with iPhone app is good enough for this site to be flipped in the flippa for atleast $1000. I built that for free and I am going to show people in the videos how they can build free iPhone app/Android app.

          Anyway thanks for your comments.

You want to show people how to build a site like that? You will be competing with people building sites with Wordpress I guess but to be honest, I would use a cleaner, less cluttered site as the "end result" example site.

If it's easy enough to build and maintain then there is potential for people looking for options beyond Wordpress but you will have to sell it as that.

Thank you for your comments David.

This is digg like site and I am afraid this kind of script was not there in WP world as of my knowledge. But may be I am wrong.

Virtually there is zero maintainability and self marketing is inbuilt in the heart of this idea. Blog owners who wants a bit of traffic or link juice will come and post on their own once it's get popular.
