I have a website with domain that has been up and running for 2 years and registry is about to expire. I would like renew registration with privacy protection to make finding info about me a little bit harder. Is this going to hurt my serps with google???

I cannot imagine that it would have anything to do with the rankings. None of us can say for sure, of course, but it would be an unusual criterion to care about.

  • I've never heard of search engine spiders checking for registration info. They simply read what is on the page.

I have read some things where if for example selling your domain you loose domain age. I also heard that if you register a domain for a longer period of time that you gain serps. Just things I heard but not verified.

Go search YouTube for videos from Matt Cutts (Google engineer) about these issues. He has a bunch of them on there where he shoots down a lot of the myths, like how long you register your domain. He's flat-out denied that it has anything to do with rankings.

Then again, he is a Google employee. He is not completely free to divulge everything. But when he flatly confirms or denies a claim, I usually believe him. It's when he goes kind of wishy-washy that it's anybody's guess.

Well, if I were google, I would isolate such things so programmers wouldn't know for SURE. But checking things like this would be VERY intensive, and the registries FROWN on it! Most tiers, LIMIT the checks a LOT. So I DOUBT google would do anything with them. BESIDES, the timing of domains no longer means anything. What is more meaningful? registering 10 years, or registering for one, and setting it to autorenew? ALSO, they USED to really limit the number of years you could buy. I think it was like 4 years. Who's to say they won't increase it again?

And the deal with private registration makes sense, but there are THREE problems!

          1. A BIG drain on the registries!
          2. Mistakes, moves, and little nothing changes may be made that mean NOTHING.
          3. It is unfair.

ALSO, info like THIS would likely not be enforced under an NDA. What THEY would care about is odd stuff that IS used to rank, and how it is weighted.

Matt Cutts basically said in that video, "We look at links and content... and we do have a patent filed that could take domain registration into account, but at the moment it's not a factor in ranking worth worrying about". I won't go into Trust Rank in this thread.
