Is Mac Text Edit a Plain Text Editor???

I just had some trouble formatting an htaccess file. To make a long story short I called my host's support and after the tech checked my htacess file I was asked if I used the Mac's text edit program (which I thought was a plain text editor).

Anyway it seems text edit inserted spurious code into the htaccess file.

Has anybody else experienced this and what is a good plain text editor for the mac??

Was it in plain text mode or RTF? The default is RTF. You can change that in its preferences.

    If that's not it, I don't know. I haven't had any issues.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

The default for TextEdit is Rich Text Format (rtf) but you can save as plain text. Under Format choose "Make Plain Text".

Best free Mac plain text editor is TextWrangler from Bare Bones Software

    Hope this helps,

      Dan & Geoff,

I had RTF set as the default...operator error.

I use textedit all the time. I don't know if I accidentally switched it to RTF but I'm surprised it hasn't bitten me before.

      Anyway thanks for the assist.
