Affiliate companies and their cookies

I am working with an affiliate company that sets a cookie that will over write a previous one from another affiliate. That is good if the last site they visit and decide to buy is mine but not good if they do their research on my site and come back later and make the decision from the company website that is doing Adwords and is at the top of the page.

What companies do you prefer and what cookie methods do you think are the most fair?

I wish that you could put an affiliate link inside of an iFrame with Commission Junction. This method works with clickbank and a few of other ones but I hear that with CJ it won't be tracked properly and you won't receive a commission.

I suppose that could be considered cookie stuffing? In my situation I have great traffic, am #3 on Google for the product name but sales seem to be low. I think people are coming back and clicking on the adwords listing and commissions are being paid to the company instead of me...

That's the most common method, 9/10 affiliate programs and networks use "last referrer" cookies.

      Rondo,
So that is the norm and is what everyone lives with? Cookie stuffing is of no value which is good since that is technically a black hat method. My concern is that the company engages in Adwords and is at the top of the SE. That does not seem "right".
What is the thinking on this?

Are you sure they are overwriting your cookie? Usually a vendor will use a direct link to their site which will not overwrite your affiliate cookie, so hopefully you should still get the commission.

However if you are sure the vendor is being sneaky and overwriting affiliate cookies then I'd stop promoting them straight away.

Or create your own product for it if you're ranking #3 and getting high traffic.

      Nate,
Had that idea about 30 minutes ago. Great minds think alike...
Ebook is the norm, do you have experience with something else?

        Hi BillWynne,

This is why our network introduced first referral feature.

This feature offers reasonable amount to affiliates who are the first ones to introduce new client/buyer as we believe that those affiliates deserve at least something instead of big flat zero.

Plus, first referrals often are indicators that there is something that can be improved on your site as you didn't close the sale etc.etc.

It is a very debatable topic but I believe that both affiliates, the first and the last one to close the sale deserves commission.
