Does Anyone Flip Websites Anymore?

A few years ago everyone was talking about website flipping, you saw books, programs, even seminars.

But you don't hear about it much anymore. Has it just gone underground or has the recession had the same affect on it as real estate flipping?

Is anyone still doing it profitably? If so, where?

  • I personally know of 4 Warriors that still flip sites successfully, and I'm quite sure there are dozens more here. It's never been my personal forte, though, so I have no clue where other than Flippa.

Flipping site is still very profitable. I am still trying to get the hang of it though. Last month, I made roughly a $900 profit flipping a site I worked on for a little over one month.

I hear that people are having good success flipping websites relating to niches in selling services such as seo and linkbuilding.

Yes - and not long after that everyone was talking about making money with adsense....and then they were talking about CPA....and then it was offline work....

And every time a subject becomes talked about (again) - there are smart marketers selling books, programs and even seminars on "how to do it" (whatever the "it" of the moment is).

BUT - people who flip sites, earn with adsense, understand CPA and work with offline clients were doing it before "everyone was talking" and they do it after everyone moves to the next "great money making idea".

Site flipping is still a viable monetization technique IMHO but it does not some experince to be able to flip with profit.

Almost anything done in the past can still be done profitably. I still have friends that flip real estate, which is FAR more difficult than websites. It's pretty simple. Build a site to $1k in consistent provable income. Sell it for more on Flippa (at least 6k, depending on how long it's been making money). If it took you one month, you just had a 7k month.

The flipping landscape has changed considerably at Flippa, but it's still a thriving business. In the past, simple start up sites with no income and no traffic were all the rage, but they don't do so well anymore in the marketplace.

Flipping somewhat established sites with revenue and/or traffic is what sells these days. This is something that will always sell, because it is essentially 'virtual' real estate that generates monthly income, and this intrinsic value is what buyers will be looking for, whether on Flippa or elsewhere.

Why would you possibly sell that site? I mean just wait 6 month and you make more money than selling the site! I comparison to the offline work 1k is an incredible high monthly income for working one month.

So what would be wrong about this calculations:
Selling sites: 7k per month * 12 = 84k per year, you have to continue working
      Keeping sites 1k +2k + 3k ... and so on = 13k*6 = 78k every year and no need to work anymore

I was looking to flip a website recently but having had a look at Flippa it seems as though the days of gettng 1.5 years worth of proven monthly turnover is not the norm anymore?

The site I wanted to sell does around the $1.4k a month which would have been $25k - but other sites reporting the same sort of monthly revenue were only selling for about $8 or 9K.

Maybe you didn't look into the right places.
There's all kind of website flipping activity in all sections of this forum.
Google search: "Website Flipping" About 1,450,000 results (0.12 seconds)
With "" About 9,390,000 results (0.05 seconds) + 8 Ads (right hand side)
Flippa dot com also will give an idea of it.
Profitable? Depending who you asking. Some, their mouth reaches both ears... Others, are crying like paid mourner.

How difficult is it to actually transfer the site once it is sold? I am pretty decent at building sites, yet terrified of actually transferring them!

It's not hard. Once you've done one, it takes about 15 minutes for a Wordpress blog. Here's some free instructions.

      Jacked,

May I ask. Do you follow your own methods or have you followed one of the many "how to" guides on the subject? If the latter, whose methods do you recommend?

      Regards.

No business is a loss if you understand
how to run it profitably. So is website flipping

Imagine in the offline, incumbent management of
a company will sell their corporation because of
consistent loss making. Now the same company
is taken over by new managers and it turns out
to make profit! It is how you go about every business.
    Period!

flipping is not only lucrative but very easy to do. Especially if you can create a site in a niche that is popular. I wont go into that here, but It only takes a few hours on flippa to search and see what people are craving for.

I know one very smart warrior that only has to flip one or two sites a month for a full time income. He is very good at it, but when you talk to him, there was big ups and downs.

Gerald, the main difference between the "one hit" wonders on Flippa and the ones who are making significant money over the long-term is that the serious people treat their flipping venture as a business, and this is absolutely crucial to success in flipping.

This is definitely not a "get rich quick" quick scheme that makes you money overnight, and I think the ones who thought this way have pretty much dropped out due to the marketplace showing a marked preference for established sites that have existing traffic and/or revenue.

    Totally agree with @paulie888.
I still do flip and trust me, flipping website will always be a profitable business.
People will always want to buy websites that make profit instead of creating
    and establishing them.

The key here is to flip an established website (or a business) instead of a turnkey.

I'm making 5 figures a month with my portfolio of sites that I buy and sell. I do this full time and am co-owner of most of the popular courses on the subject such as KillerFlippingSecrets.com, BuyingAndSellingWebsites.com and FlipWebsites.com.

I have numerous success stories and I've not only bought profitable websites for amazing prices but I've also instantly built a newbie into an investor by selling him a couple of my smaller established sites.

The business model is still going strong! Feel free to contact me with any questions you have. I'm always happy to help.

It's still going strong. Most of the stuff you hear is just hype. They love creating a frenzy over a particular type of IM marketing, then after a while they claim that it's dead or oversaturated. While there is always some truth in those claims, hard-core marketers never abandon something that is still viable.

Do a search in the WSO forum, you will find more than one product for sale. Lots of people do it. Flippa makes a business out of supporting this market, along with multiple web site brokers.

Despite all the ranting that occurred when Sitepoint transformed into Flippa several years ago (with its increased fees and add-ons), business has grown considerably since then. You just need to arm yourself with the proper (and profitable) approach towards site flipping - certain flipping models that may have worked 2 years ago may not work anymore today.

I recently purchased a WSO on site flipping and actually just got done posting my second site. The first one sold for $125 and was more of a test than anything else. I'm hoping to move this second site with a BIN purchaser.

It's actually kind of fun. I've been building the sites myself, but do plan on outsourcing them after I get a few more flips under my belt. I want to know exactly what works and what doesn't before I start sending off bulk orders on designs.

As long as there is an internet, there will be site flipping. There will always be people who want or need to sell, and there will be people who want to buy. There are specialist and brokers who assist in this activity, and the activity is more robust today than ever.

Exactly, while we obviously cannot be completely sure if Flippa is going to be around 5 years from now, some sort of pre-eminent site flipping marketplace will exist at that time, as there'll still be a need for people to buy and sell websites - this is an evergreen business model that isn't going to die off anytime soon!
