Default Same content on .co.uk & .com sites

Hi

I know duplicate content and SEO is discussed regularly, but I couldn't find anything that related to specificallly to this question.

Apologies if it's a silly question.

My scenario is this:

I want to target different keywords in different geographical locations for the sale of a digital product.

So I would like to have two sites, mysite.co.uk and mysite.com. Both sites would have pretty much the same content, although very slightly different as optimised for different keywords, and would be selling the same product (one in £, the other i $).

I can have the sites hosted separately if that helps.

So my question is, can I do this without being penalised by Google, or should I have unique content on the two sites?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
