Looks like my email open rates beats Frank Kern's

So I am on Frank Kern's email list and I must say I really learn a lot from the dude. I really like his laid back attitude as well.

The free stuff he shares with his list is better than most paid stuff I've seen.

Anyways, he did a test with a new subject line in one of his emails and today he let us know about the results which he is raving about.

24% open rate he got from that email subject line and supposedly it is great.

Now I have never been into list building (stupid I know) but over the last 6 months or so I have been building a decent sized list and my open rates are always 50% plus and I thought that was ****ty..

Now it looks like I am doing great when compared to Frank Kern who is arguably one of the best in the business.

I do realize that his list is probably 100 times bigger than mine so 24% probably is insanely good for such a big list I don't know.

What do you guys consider to be a great open rate?

Cheers,

Jan

I would expect it to be around a 20-40 but it depends how qualified the list is. 50% seems great you must have people who love you! You must give good stuff to them sounds like i should be on your list. I got franks email too it wouldnt surprise me if its over 100k his list

Subjective experience here, naturally, but given my own extreme and prolonged difficulties, once, in unsubscribing from one of his lists to which I'd never opted in anyway, I'd actually expect his lists to be very large indeed and to have pretty low open-rates.

open rates are subject to list size, age, your relationship with them ect.

for some lists 25% is great... for others 5% could be great... for spammers 1% is phenomenal lol all relative.

best thing to do is test your list with subject lines and segment.

customer lists always have the best open rate unless your product sucks.

here are my open rates for the last couple of my emails.

    22.0%
    24.5%
    14.3%
    30.0%
    3.9% OOPS LOL.
    31.1%
    32.3%
    81.9% HOME RUN!

so I guess I would say it's about average for anybody considered a halfway decent marketer

I forgot to mention that my list is a buyers list only so that probably has a lot to do with it.

      Thanks for that.

So, exactly. The bigger the list the lower the open rates. I feel it's because by its very nature of being so huge, a bigger list is less likely to be laser targeted and as relevant to all members of the list.

Thanks for sharing, it was an interesting read!

I got the Kern email too and thought it sounded a bit low, but that explains it i guess!

      Cool share, John.

I did notice the graphs are from 2004 to 2006 so things may have changed.

I also noticed that the "Guru" who had the 24+% open rate that he attributed to the subject line was in fact someone who can get away with that type of activity. I know I opened the email because of the "From" line more than I did because of the "Subject" line. Although the combination may be deadly in some marketer's hands.

I think 24% from his type of list, a huge list, would be a good open rate. Not the best in the world and not anything to rave about, but still pretty darn good.

In my opinion it seems the list that's gonna get the best open rate is smaller and laser-targeted.

If I get an open rate of anything above 40% I would say that i have not abused my lists...

i like it to be anywhere above 20% for sure.... and I am in high 20s now....

Slightly off topic, but somehow seems the right time to ask...

Does Aweber fail to track open and click rates accurately? I read somewhere (long time ago) that your open and click rate will always be higher than what Aweber reports.

Yes, it does (fail). Partly because it can't track the open-rate of plain-text emails, only of HTML-format ones.

That said, they can track when a link in a plain-text email is clicked, and "add one" to the open-rate to allow for that.

does anyone here use the feature in aweber that allows you to send followup to only those who didn't open the original email? I read about that trick just recently but haven't put it to use yet. Gonna go look now since this jogged my memory

I'm not sure about GetResponse, but yes, Aweber does offer this.

They've sent us an email a few months back, informing us of this new feature (tutorial with video and all).

I believe that the bigger your list, the lower the open rate continues to get. So frank kern's 24% is a good one. What is however more important is the clickthrough rate of your emails.

I been following kern from day 1.

I actually have all his emails he has ever sent. yes all lauches, and everything. I have studied these over the years and have noted they all come accross as email from your friends mucking around. So it is not suprise this approach is working well.

Since taking this approach with my lists, I think they think it does not look like spam and my open rates have almost doubled. It is a nice little lesson in this for everyone.

Wow, pound for pound, you will usually get better conversions with higher open rates.

Who wouldn't take a 24% open rate with a list the size of Kern's? We should be so "unlucky!" I think that's proably just about what I average, but I have slightly more freebie takers than buyers on my own list. Once that percentage starts shifting more toward buyers, I'm sure the open % will creep up correspondingly.

That's nothing, I get an open rate of 100% on one of my lists.

I am the only one subscribed though

Edit: and just of you're wondering, that's my test list that I'm talking about,

Sweet! Just opted-in to Legendary's list to hopefully pick up some nuggests on list building. Just one question though.

Why doesn't Frank collect my first name?

Because just asking for an email addy helps get more folks to sign up than also asking for their name.

The other reason may be that in the IM niche people like to use derogitory terms in the 'name' box.

"Dear Goatbreath," always makes the rest of the email seem slightly less important...

I wanted to throw this out to this thread to see if I can get a response..

Is there a list on the internet which gives you all the variation of spam-listed words like...

Instead if saying FREE.. people usually write FRE.e or somethng like that...

Coz as you all know....some isp's filter out salutations like "Dear Driend" as spam.

Also... What was the subject line for the e-mail that you opened and read about his amazing results (24%)

50% is an awesome open rate, nice work. I typcially get anywhere from 20-30% depending on the subject line. I haven't been building lists for long to be fair so I'm still learning.
