I would say always write your emails like you are writing to a friend. Don't use capitals for your subject headline. I used to thought it was a good idea to put the subscribers name in the subject line, but then I ask my self - would I put their name in if I was writing to my friend? Probably not. So it is something you have to think about.

I've split tested using the respondant's name - and at least for my niche, it works better to NOT.

Test it. It may work better or not depending. But test it.

My testing results were the same as yours.

I've also discussed it with a lot of people on several of my lists, and heard over and over and over again that people dislike emails addressing them by name, because they think it "makes the sender sound like an insurance salesman", and a lot of similar stuff.

It also suits me not to address them by name, because you build a bigger list if you ask for email addresses only, on the opt-in.

Yes, you want a friendly and conversational tone for sure. More than that, work in personal experiences that apply to the subject of your emails as much as you can. Don't be boring, but a quick anecdote makes you seem more "real" to your readers and it also improves sales conversions if you're pitching something in that email.

    Here's a controversial one...

Mail more often. I used to only mail about every 3 days. As a test I started mailing 5 days a week. Know what happened? I'm making more money per month and I'm NOT getting more unsubscribes. Win-win! Just be sure you've taken the time with new subscribers to build some trust and win them over before you start sending lots of offers. And the other big key is to be highly selective in what you recommend. Only the best for your subscribers! Anything less will come back to haunt you.

      Hi

Always try to add a personal touch to your emails

Dont spam people to death, imagine getting an email from some company daily...would you ultimately buy their product or click the "unsubscribe" button

Have a check on the number of unsubscribers...if the count is seriously decreasing, then chances are you are doing something wrong

Have a short 2-3 questions feedback form when people click on the unsubscribe button....few will fill the form, few will not, but a feedback from people always helps

Monitor the open rate.....is everything going to the spam folder???:confused:

Send no sales, no marketing pitch mails to people sometimes to keep them engaged and entertained....talking to people everytime about your product/service can lead to unsubscription

      THIS MIGHT BE DIFFICULT

Create a funnel of people who reply to mails

      Example:

Step 1:Send an email to 100,000 people
      Step 2:1000 Replied back

Treat these 1000 people in a different manner than the rest....BECAUSE THEY REPLIED:p

Step 3:Send an email to these 1000 people which should look like a continuation of the first mail to which they replied

These 1000 people should feel that somebody is having a conversation with them.....They dont want to be pitched again

      Hope this helps

      thanks
      Ankur

        Mistakes:

Don't add a personal message or touch

Email too little or too often - I only email about once a week, but was interested in what Zeus said about emailing every day and not getting any more unsubscribes

Too much promotions or too little - too many will irritate people but too little won't make you any money

        Not following up with customers

I guess i can chip in a tip here.
What i have discovered is that sending too many free offers to your list neutralizes their buying thirst. So when next you want to send something valuable to your list, make sure you include a PS of a paid offer. It works well for me.

Mail every day. I have had a list of over 2k for about 3-4 years, never did anything with it... I would mail every so often and pull in very little.

I've been mailing every day for about 2-3 weeks now, and I've already made THOUSANDS. Seriously.

    Mail every day.

P.S. I don't mail with an offer every single day though.

One thing I have noticed that I believe is a HUGE mistake shared by many marketers. The misleading subject line.

Don't put things like "Guess who died" or "your account needs attention" or any of those things. Another that I hate is when I get a subject line that says "You're too late". If I'm too late, don't send me anything.

Trying to sell in every email is a mistake. Help first, and do it sincerely. That way, your list will flag your messages as something to read and they will buy from you when you do recommend something.

If you're delivering a regular email, like a newsletter, it can be very beneficial to start out with a 1-2 word brand name that will be used at the beginning of ALL of your subject lines for your newsletter issues.

By doing this your readers can instantly identify the source of the email and it will be less likely to be lost among every other email in their inbox.

After that, use the words IN THIS ISSUE: Then, briefly describe the main subject you'll be covering in the issue, usually the title of your featured article.

eg If your newsletter is called "Trout Fishing Secrets", it might look like this:
[Trout Fishing] In This Issue: 7 sure-fire ways to catch the biggest trout.

Simple, but a lot of marketers don't think to do this.

With regards to sending to many emails i think you can train your subscribers to expect emails twice daily. If you send twice per day and this is what your subs come to expect they will not be put off or unsubs from you. Yes some will but my results seem to be fine using this method.

Again the quality that you send matters so sending rubbish twice per day will have an effect on your unsubs.

Mistakes? They put so much emphasis on the getting the sales letter copy just so, but hardly any attention to the follow up email copy. These are CRUCIAL, because they give your prospects another chance to say yes.

Get this piece of the puzzle right, and you'll be golden.

    Here is my advice:
    1. Be personal - try to organize your mailing lists by age/sex/occupation and be as personal as you can; for example, if you are using a 18-20 years old mailing list, instead of "free video lesson" use "free video lessons for teens"; tell your audience that you KNOW SOMETHING about them, that makes them feel respected.
    2. Be plainspoken - avoid jargon, they must understand what you are writing;
    3. Be positive - avoid negative words like never, last, cannot, be careful, must and so on; instead, use positive words like can, wonderful, free, direct, change etc; so, in the subject line instead of "Final Notice" or "Closing tonight" (which sound almost like a threat) use "Friendly notice" or "Our wonderful journey is about to end", you can feel the difference.

Email Marketing Mistake 101: The marketer fails to test different subject lines and email messages to see which pull better than others.

Email Marketing Mistake 102: Email marketers fail to see the value of buying traffic to capture leads. They forget to add the value of backend promotions over time once they capture the lead. Therefore their thinking is skewed.

Email Marketing Mistake 103: Email marketers fail to know their numbers (what each lead is worth to them).

Email Marketing Mistake 104: Beginner email marketers never mail their lists enough. They take it personally when someone unsubscribes.

Email Marketing Mistake 105: Most email marketers fail to separate their lists into prospects and buyers.

I think the most common mistake people make is they give up too soon. Sometimes even when they are incredibly to close to make it big. So one good piece of advice would be to be more persevering.

my biggest one was not following kern. I actually have every single email frank kern has ever sent. In a big swipe file! I have studied this.

I realise quickly I was screwing up in the good old days because I was sounding like an idiot marketers, you know the ones that send the sales pitch to your inbox 3 times a day.

I realise that was WRONG WRONG WRONG. I started mucking around and having fun and sending emails incoorperating frank kerns style and almost instantly my sales doubled.

So do not use email to come across as a moron seller...on hyped up cordial. use email to help people, and to gently sell stuff to people. This works like gangbusters for me.
