Coupon codes as a niche?

I think it depends on the model you will choose (basically how you get paid): you can charge clients for placing their coupon on your website or publish coupons to the products from affiliate networks.. But I really think it can be profitable.

VERY profitable. I have a few sites with 'product name coupon' as my EMD and I make a killing from them, and very easily.

It's usually pretty easy to rank for that particular keyword, and even if it doesn't get many searches, it's so targetted that you get a really good conversion rate.

  It seems very targeted, and most people who are searching for that word should have a pretty high commercial intent. So yes, it most likely can be very profitable. However, definitely check competition before you nose dive in

From experience yes. But profitable is subjective. I spent two years building a half @ss coupon (printable) site and didnt have time to really take it to where it needed to go. However I was able to amass a subscriber list of over 6000, get traffic over 18k per month (which should have been much more) and monetize with adsense at around 250-400 per month. I then figured someone else could really take this to another level so I sold if for over $4500 which was actually a discount.

So if printable coupons can be profitable, yes I belive coupon codes can be too. I have a product I created that would help you find coupon codes and anything else you need instantly if you want it (no charge if you give me an honest review of it). Pm me if interested.

I've never had one, but judging from the number of them out there, I would say it is a very profitable niche. Especially when considering the condition of our economy at the moment. BTW, I'm assuming you are in the U.S. when I say that last part.

If my wife is any example, you may have a big winner on your hands.

She has a regular milk run of coupon sites and blogs she visits. Before she discovered she could find money (discounts and free products) by searching for them, Google was a mystery to her. Now, she can find almost anything quickly and efficiently.

From watching her, the only thing I'd be wary of is making the EMD niche too specific.

"ToiletPaperCouponCodes.com" might work for you, while the available traffic for "[ProductName]JumboPackCouponCodes.com" might be a little too narrow to do you much good.

Edit:

Changed the second example to remove trademarked product name. As Mike points out in post #9 below, using a trademark in a TLD is NOT a good idea.

Thanks for the catch, Mike. I definitely don't want anyone getting the idea I recommend or endorse such a practice.

  Coupons are an incredible niche to use for Adsense, believe it or not. Be careful though with the above suggestion to use a domain of "product name" coupons.
  
  I had a domain name like that and got a letter from the company attorney when I overtook them for position 1 requesting me to take the site down as it violated their trademark. I was getting 300 visitors a day so I was definitely cutting into their traffic and I was at 50-60 clicks a day for that site on Adsense.

  Well it can certainly get you in trouble. However if you contact the owner of the name registration and managed to get their permission to use it as a coupon or discount related website, you should be ok.
  
  The pitch behind this is to let them understand that you will attract new customers for their products that would have gone to the competition if it where not for your efforts.
  
  Just make sure of the following:
  
  1. you get authorization before launching the site.
  2. your clearance comes from someone within the company who is authorized to make such and arrangement.
  3. you work out a time reference inside the deal (i.e. x amount of years)
  
  Before doing any of this, make sure to consult to a intellectual property attorney. Getting a cease and desist letter is never a happy day so check your cost/benefit calculation if you want to go that route. The fees and negotiation that it entails can eat away at your profits.
  
  However you could crack a nice niche generating idea and present yourself to future companiess as a valued asset to their marketing a sales efforts.

It seems to me that updating the site would be a pain in the @ss. I've read of some people that make decent money selling the Entertainment Coupon Book on their sites. I also get tons of spam promoting the Entertainment Books so there is probably good money in it.

Are you going to manually update the available coupons?

Coupons are a great way to make money on your site as long as you keep it simple, neat and try not to stuff every possible ad-click, and coupon code link you possibly can into the site.

Too many of the sites out there are just crap - even CouponMom's site which is one of the better known ones, is frankly too busy and confusing. Usually there is garish graphics, zillions of buttons and clicks, and it becomes a mind-numbing maze to try to just get to the coupons, or the tips.

And the audience for these kinds of sites are many times not that web-savvy, many do not go beyond email and face-book. So, keeping that in mind, a nice clean site with updated content, a clean interface, and easy to understand instructions to get the coupons is your best bet.

I know - my wife started making money on her site on it's first day, while it was not even ready just because of the above mentioned things!

All great comments. Just remember the main thing that most sites don't take advantage of. BUILD A FOLLOWING YOU CAN REACH OUT AND TOUCH. Before I sold my coupon site I had 6000 opt in email addresses and 1500 twitter followers (started slacking on twitter). That is the most valuable asset you could have because I sent weekly updates to let them know. Meanwhile everytime I sent an email I got a spike of traffic and revenue!

I would imagine that a lot of the coupon codes are scraped, but there are places that aggregate them, as well, both for free and for a fee.

Well people searching for coupons are looking for a discount before buying something so its very profitable indeed. The big coupon sites are making ridiculous amounts of money.

Picking a good coupon codes keyword rich domain would work well. You might find quite a few .coms too.

Groupon has their own niche. Competition was easy. Even doint the site I had half @ssed it was still getting 18k uniques a month and about 300+ subscribers. Printable coupons are what folks are really looking for. That is a niche in and of itself. I need to put together a course on how to start a coupon site one day. But one thing you must realize. Most (not all) of the coupons sites out there are NOT Internet marketers. If you know your stuff its easy to get in and make it a business.

How would someone go about monetizing a website that receives coupon traffic? I have about on average 300 visitors/day looking for specific coupons..

The only way I've monetized these websites are with cpa offers but only making about $10/day.

Actually I have noticed a decent amount of Adsense revenue
from my coupon-related sites. Not only that, but they seem to
be selling well on Flippa, so that's a good sign. It's definitely
worth your time and the investment. It'd be pretty easy to grab
a coupon ranking, too. Most of them have little to no competition.

EMD is shorthand for Exact Match Domain. For example, if you were trying to score a ranking for "rubber chickens" as a keyword, the EMD would be 'rubberchickens.com'. The .com part could be replaced by any other extension.

Id say so.......I look up coupon codes all the time!!

If your going to run adsense.....go into your adwords acound and run the cost of your key words into the cost tool....see how much they are going to pay per click!!
