Company not working to agreed contract

On Feb 8th I paid an American company (I'm from the UK) to design and develop a new website for me for my new business, as they advised that we do so (we had a business before this one which was in the same market but with different products and we were thinking about just using the same design for the new business, until they advised us to change it). Also, I had used their company for design work a lot in the past and was impressed with their work, which is why I trusted them. The timescale for this project was 14 - 17 working days which was stated in the contract. This would mean that my project was due to be completed between Feb 28th and March 3rd. My project is STILL being worked on as we speak, and at the rate they are working at, I think it is going to be at least another couple of months until this project is finished.

If they completed the project on time, I would have been nearly two months into my business by now. I would have done nearly two months worth of SEO and advertising, and I should have had sales by now. This project is really putting my business behind schedule - and one of the worst things about this is that they don't seem to care. My business plan was to be making a basic wage by 8 or 9 months time, and so far the web developers have cut nearly two months off of that already. I now only have 6 to 8 months to be earning a basic wage.

Most of my bills for my business started just before this website was due to be complete, which means I am paying bills for things that I am not even using just now. I have spent around 10K on stock, which is just sitting there doing nothing. If they don't get this website up and running asap, I am going to have lost a lot of money because of them.

They have provided us with at least 5 different timescales for this project to be completed, and each time they have broken the agreement. The contract was for them to work 8 hours per day on my project, and they admitted recently that they were not doing this. The work they were updating me with looked as though they had been doing 1-2 hours some days and nothing on other days.

Another issue is that they will not contact me by telephone, and I cannot contact them by telephone. I can't even contact the development team myself - they use staff who forwards on their comments to us by email, and we have to forward our replies to these staff to pass back to the developers. It's just a silly form of communication, which is probably one reason why there are so many communication problems within their business.

What I am wondering is if there is anything I can do about all of this, and if there is anything I legal I can do to try and make them stick to a contract? If things keep going the way they are going, I could lose my business that I have worked really hard on, and possibly put me in financial difficulties. All because they have not stuck to an agreed contract.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi thanks for the replies. Yeah I know about Wordpress etc, but my website is an ecommerce store (forgot to mention that) which is why I got developers to build it.

The developers are supposed to be having a meeting with the managers about this today (they have had a meeting before about this which didn't change anything really).

Will let you guys know what happens
