How To: Build A List - The Bum Way - In 5, umm I mean 4 Steps!

This method can be as cheap or expensive as you make it.

Some of the largest web marketing guru's charge hundreds and even thousands for this method and then deliver to you dozens of videos and manuals... I think that is bull****.

If your real a tight wad, you can make it totally free. Or you can supercharge it with some capital.

Do not be a silly billy and disregard this as some crappy free tutorial. This thing is worth as much as you make it. You have heard this quote a thousand times before:

"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." - Confucius

STEP #1 - Sign up for Mail Chimp or any other free email list building service & create your campaign ( i recommend mail chimp cos its free and its easy to use)

STEP #2 - Sign up for blogger or any other free website/blog service that allows free hosting domain and commercial use (again i recommend blogger because its idiot proof and allows for commercial use)

STEP #3 - Paste your html code from Mail Chimp into blogger, and then edit blogger so that the code (opt in form) is the only thing visible.

STEP #4 - Promote your Opt In page any way you can. Adwords and FaceBook ads are fast and easy but they cost money. Or you can use any other method you wish such as twitter, seo, youtube, articles yada yada yada.

STEP #5 - umm there is no step 5 - have a cup o tea (add some gin, lol).

    Step 4 could be break down into:

    Step 1 - Write or create something interesting and give it away, article, video, images or downloads.

    Step 2 - Promote what you create in step 1 in related blogs, with blog comments. Post in forums some of the unique stuff you create in step 1. Use social media and network, network, network!

    Step 3 - Repeat the above until you are satisfied with the result.

      Be careful, though, not to use MailChimp for any kind of "affiliate marketing", which is expressly prohibited there and is how so many Warriors have lost their lists. This current thread will tell you what you need to know on this subject.

    How hard is it to export a list from one autoresponder to another?

    Would it be a big headache if I started with mailchimp and switched to GetResponse down the road?

      It would be a lot worse than just a "big headache".

      This is exactly why it's so important not to start with a free autoresponder. It's a false economy. In fact, it isn't really an "economy" at all.

      You'll nearly always (not quite always) have to get the people on your list to opt in all over again, if you try to change autoresponders later, and that will often lose between 50% and 75% of your business's greatest asset.

      A business model which depends on the outset at "changing autoresponders later" is fundamentally flawed.

      I don't know about GetResponse, but Aweber costs $1 for the first month and then $19 after that. If you're not making $20 in two months, it isn't a business at all.

      Few people here are bigger advocates of list-building than I, but even I would strongly advise you that it's better to start without an autoresponder at all than it is to start with a free one.

        That's been my thinking, but I'm also notorious for procrastinating. Your post makes me more confident that, in this case, waiting is the better idea until I'm absolutely sure which paid service I want to go with (I'm still deciding between Aweber vs. GetResponse).

      You're talking severe migraine rather than a mere
      headache.

      First of all you would need to change all your optin
      forms, squeeze pages and plugins.

      Secondly, and much more importantly, the vast
      majority of autoresponders require that imported
      leads re-confirm their subscription and that will
      severely reducfe the size of your list.

    Good advice here. I started with MailChimp and was worried about record keeping ie. lists. So like all of my stuff I had the optin form log to separate places. MailChimp AND a database on my own server. My DB was not set up to mail or anything else, basically just be a "copy" of the list. Boy was that a great idea. I tried to migrate my list from MC to Aweber and found out it was to long of a process and not fuly guaranteed. Thank god for backups. P.S. If you arent familiar with code this may not be an option for you, however if you are this could save you alot of time and headache. Just my 2 cents.
