and do you think it would be profitable?

If it had good traffic and it was aimed at the right niche then of course it could be profitable. You can add highly relevant adverts to very specific sub-niches of content.

I wouldn't start a project from the perspective of choosing the platform above the content, however if you have a project that a wiki is the best platform for, then of course you should use wiki. Personally, I found the hand coding cumbersome.

I think that for wiki sites, you're going to have to want to create it to educate your industry above wanting to make money. You will have to build content, grow your community of editors and market the heck out of it before even thinking about adding adverts.

In other words, it would definitely be a long-term technique if you want to make a substantial amount of money with it.

If you slap up a bunch of ads on some generic, slowly updated content, then your ROI will probably be much lower.

JMO, of course, but I've been watching wiki sites lately in a lot of different niches. The successful ones are the ones that are fully active (communtiy).

    Good luck!

Another way to tackle earning money on a wiki site - is that if it is a niche site - instead of advertising, work to get sponsors.

Sponsors should want to be where there is good content and more so if there is a good community.

I suspect that a community might be more supportive of sponsor ads rather than Google AdWords or banner ads.
