Question about Backlinks and Ezinearticles for Article Marketers

I have been writing and submiting articles to EZA for the past six months now. The articles tend to rank high (at least temporarily) in Google, and I was happy with that.
But last night I started t think about backlinks.
If you have multiple backlinks from one website, doesn't Google just count it once (in terms of SEO)?
So if I had 1 article leading back to my website, or 50 articles, wouldn't it be the same in Google's eyes?
Now, I know that the articles themselves will generate traffic because they are listed high in the SERPs. But it won't increase your backlinks, correct?
Sure, if a publisher picks it up (and does keep you resource box), then you will get additional backlinks that way. But you won't be generating additional backlinks from EZA itself.
Am I correct in this though?
