Newbies -- one tip can save you $X,000+!

Newbies and those who have been trying unsuccessfully to make money...

In particular, those who have been spending money without making it...

Don't spend money on IM that you didn't earn with IM.

Why?

  1. It reduces information overload. There's lots available for free, but you're not paralyzed by the fear that you should hurry up and read what you just paid good money for. You can look up free info as you need it... "How do I buy hosting?", "How do I install Wordpress?", "What's a good theme?", etc.
  2. Most "innovative new methods" are creative combinations of methods taught for free. If you learn the basics, you can come up with your own innovative methods without being limited by learning too much. If you don't learn what's impossible, you can make it possible.
  3. You don't buy $X,000 courses from gurus who are extremely skilled at psychological tactics. As a newbie, I nearly got taken in by several of them. If I hadn't stuck to my rule, I'd be down thousands of dollars or more.
Stop wasting your money.

If you need something that badly, work on Fiverr, Cloudcrowd, or here. Provide simple services -- you don't need products to teach you how to do it. Once you've earned that cash in your Paypal account, you'll find that either you can invest in the product, appreciate it, and consume it much more carefully, or that you don't need it anymore because you're already making money!

If you need to, remove your credit card from your Paypal account or make the password hard to remember and access -- whatever it takes. Just stop buying stuff when you haven't earned a cent online!

Grr... just wanted to get that off my chest.

Have you used this method to control your own spending? Are you going to now? I'm definitely going to start enforcing this a bit more strictly again.

I have sort of used this method. I am not making anything online, but I still have to pay for hosting. Out of the three months I have had my hosting account, I have only used what I got from fiverr to pay for one month. I have not made anything else :-(
I am trying to offer PLR stuff on fiverr right now so I hope that does better than my other gigs.

Make money before you spend??? That's nuts!

Good advice and things like Fiverr make it easy to make a few extra bucks here and there.

Besides, there's a ton of free stuff available online.

  • This was the method I followed at first, too, but it was because I didn't have any money to spend on IM.

Even after I started earning, though, I made the mistake of buying some things here and there that wound up being completely worthless (most of them, in fact), so I understand and agree with what you are saying. But, then again, I have to say that I have also spent money that was worth every penny.

I guess the lesson I learned was to be very careful what I spent my money on, and learning to look past the hype (that includes the WSO forum, as well).

Most of the stuff you find out there can be found for free, if you just look hard enough. I've seen literally thousands of products over the years offering the exact same information that could have been found just by reading through the Warriors Forum. In fact, I suspect that's how a number of these products were created.
