Computer Hacked...3 Late Orders and 1 Pissed Client. What Should I Do?

This all started midday, last Saturday.

I was in the middle of writing a couple of articles for a client, and a security message pops up telling me that I need to activate my license. I never knew that the Microsoft security center came with a license; I thought it was built-in to the Windows software. So, I just closed it, and kept typing. Then, a warning message popped up, and told me that some unauthorized program was trying to gain access to my PC. I got a little worried, but I needed to finish the articles, so I closed it again. I did have my firewall running, so it would block whatever it was. Then another said that my computer was at risk for becoming infected, and prompted me to do a scan. I ran it, and it listed 31 infected files. I tried to remove them, but the software kept asking me to enter my license key.

I tried to do a Google search, hoping I find some information about this key I'm supposed to have, but I kept getting an error page. IE6 was blocking me from the Internet because my PC was "at risk" for being infected. I spent the rest of the day trying to get past that error page but never did. I put the computer to sleep, and the next morning, things seemed to be in working order again. I opened a browser and was taken straight to my homepage. I felt relieved because I still had a little time to meet my deadlines. Then, a warning message popped up. It said that my sensitive data was at risk, and malicious spyware might be embedding itself into my system. I needed to get my license key, so I did a quick search for "XP Home Security 2011."

Man, I wish I hadn't done that. The computer went haywire, then the screen blanked out, and it shut down. My stomach turned into a big knot because I knew at that point that my computer had a virus. I had two orders due on Monday, and another on Tuesday, so I needed this thing to work. I powered it back on, but it wouldn't load past the welcome screen. I tried this several times, but it just hung there. I went through this crap all day and got no where.

So, Monday morning comes. I hit the power button, and the PC booted up just fine. My desktop loaded, but it was empty. I had only a shortcut to the Recycle Bin and one for IE6. My programs were gone. My files...gone. I tried to access the Internet, but couldn't get past that error page. And then, that dumb security message popped up again. This time, it told me that my computer had been compromised and that I needed to buy a license to prevent further damage. I was like, "WTF?" I thought about it for a minute, and I wondered whether this thing was really telling me what was happening the whole time even though it's the actual virus itself. Like, how ironic is that?

Fast forward to late Thursday evening, and I've got a working computer again. I called this PC repair guy that I tried to sell a website a couple of weeks ago, and he agreed to help me out. He told me that he'd be back in town Thursday afternoon, and that he'd get the PC cleaned up before the night was out (which he did). It doesn't end there, though.

I lost nearly a week of productivity behind that stupid virus. And I had three outstanding orders, and three probably very disgruntled clients. I contacted everyone to let them know what had happened, and proceeded to finish up their articles. Two of my clients were really cool about the situation, so I was happy about that. I had to call the last guy, though, as I didn't get a response to my email. He was really pissed; he told me that I'd be online on the Warrior Forum, and basically said that I was trying to scam him. He told me he didn't want the articles nor did he want a refund, so that left me a bit baffled.

I was also concerned because he said he saw me online, although my computer had been out of commission since Saturday afternoon. I've got accounts across about eight or nine different forums; I tried to log in to a few of them including the one here at the Warrior Forum, and as I suspected, I couldn't get in. None of my passwords worked, and I couldn't do a reset because my email address wasn't recognized. This was really bad. I had a really pissed client, and my accounts were screwed. I opened a bunch of support tickets, and explained what had happened.

So, then, I went ahead and completed my orders and sent them out. I got two positive responses Friday evening. I didn't hear back from the other guy, so I thought maybe he had a problem with the articles. I spent the whole night and next day rewriting every single article, adding as much extra content as I could. I sent the articles over again early Saturday night, and I still haven't heard anything back. I offered him a refund and the articles for free on top of that, but no word as of yet.

I did get my accounts back (which is a relief), and I now have Kaspersky and Malwarebytes installed to prevent something like this from happening again. But, I still haven't heard back from the last guy who was so ticked off at me. I'm thinking that I should maybe write up another batch of articles to send over about some topics related to his niche. What do you guys think?

Honestly, what I would do is send him the articles and the refund. That way he can have no problems with you. You explained the situation, you wrote the articles, you gave a refund... There is nothing more you can do. If that doesn't please him, nothing will. You could write 50 more articles and send them, but it wouldn't make any difference. Some people are just like that and unfortunately, we have to weed them out.

Wow, what a story. Being nice always helps, way to take the high road and go the extra mile, you rock!

Glad to see that your computer is working again.

Ginesa, it sounds like you did MORE than enough to rectify the situation in the face of a very unfortunate incident. The last customer of yours who was pissed when you told him that your computer was hacked but you would give him a refund AND the articles sounds like a d-bag, quite frankly. The customer is NOT always right, and in this case, you gave GREAT customer service, and handled everything well.

True story: My buddy was supposed to fly to northern Japan for a snowboarding trip 2 days after the recent earthquake/tsunami hit. Needless to say, his flight was delayed by several days, and due to work constraints, he couldn't postpone the trip, so he missed it. EVERY single dollar of his was refunded immediately by his airline and the resort. The airline even offered him a 50% off ticket to take the trip when he could. He of course understood that this was out of the airline's control, and was very grateful.

Lesson learned? Even when things go beyond your control, take care of your customers and 99% of them will understand and appreciate you for it. The other 1% isn't worth trying to satisfy. You did the right thing.

Agree w/Luke. You did everything right. The guy who refused both the articles and the refund is likely some kind of control freak and this is his "power" over you. Move on and don't lose any sleep over it.....

I would have sent him a refund already, but it's not possible without his communication. All three of these clients paid me by bank wire. So, the only way that I can get a refund to him is to get his receiving bank's info.

Does anyone know a way around this?

I see. I really don't know anything about that. I'm sorry. Someone on here probably does though. I just assumed the payments were via Paypal since that is the most popular.

I would send him the articles, so your conscience is clear and he has the work he paid for. As he says he doesn't want a refund, then supply the articles, drop him as a client and move one.

There's not much more you can do if he won't communicate and at least you got paid.

You missed that part. I sent him the articles anyway, even though he said he didn't want them. I sent all three orders out the same day, but only got two responses.

I then went back and rewrote the articles to make them even better than my original ones, and sent them again. But, I still haven't gotten a response.

IE6 was blocking me from the Internet because my PC was "at risk" for being infected
Im not going to lie I skim read that and I saw those dreaded letters IE6 and cringed. Then I read the rest. I would put money on it been a Fake AV product saying that your computer was well and truly compromised.

I kept reading and saw this XP Home Security 2011 AGHHHHH! If I had put money on it I would have been richer now!

I think the term firewall has become a widely used term. The "firewall" you were running was most likely not what I would call a firewall.

Kaspersky and Malwarebytes installed to prevent something like this from happening again
      Its a start.

Most likely though you had a keylogger and if you haven't had your PC formatted and re installed from scratch you are setting yourself up for reinfection.

It sounds like you've done all you can.

Some customers are looking for a reason to be angry. Doesn't make sense that he didn't immediately demand a refund, but hey -- it fits his "that person is a scammer, they took my money and delivered no articles" theory that he wants to stuff you into. :p

You've delivered articles -- twice! -- and offered a refund. That's all any reasonable person can do in an unexpected emergency like this.

Drop him and move on to find more reasonable, positive clients like those other two. They're the ones who deserve the extra attention, not the problem client.

    Ginesa,

You fell for one of the latest tricks HOOK LINE AND SINKER. You have to be more suspicious.

This is a new class of garbage. It has a simple name that is like fake antivirus. What happens is that SOMEHOW an "antivirus" program gets installed on your system. They are VERY hard to remove and often play tricks, like disabling or monetizing the internet in some way. They ALSO do something that causes you MORE grief. A friend had one that disabled outlook, for example. Anyway, you are NOT supposed to have the key. They actually HOPE you don't! I don't know if they actually infect your system as much as they do, or merely claim it, but you HAVE to get it uninstalled. THEY want you to pay to get the key to get past the problem.

If you did this with workk I gave you, I would be very upset, and have second thoughts because you just kept going, but I would understand.

Being upset toward someone because they aren't completely up-to-date on the latest and greatest virus tactics when they specialize in writing is kind of silly imo.

I would definitely give her a pass on this one if I were one of her clients in this situation.

  • You've done what you could. Move on. If he decides he wants the refund later, give it to him. I would think that anyone on the forum who has been in business for a while has had similar clients.

As far as your computer security, I would also recommend Keyscrambler. It scrambles all your keystrokes (and hence your passwords and such) in case you get infected with a keylogger. The free version is good, but I would highly recommend getting one of the paid versions for the extra protections.

    Ginesa,

I just want to chime in and say that you did the best you could under the circumstances. Most people are willing to be reasonable but this person obviously is not. You sent the articles... if he doesn't contact you again just chalk it up to experience.

I would say do the right thing send him the articles and a refund. It's shows that you're a man of your word. Also include a brief note of your troubles. If he's ever been unfortunate to have computer virus he'll understand and you might win him over...
Sorry to hear about this and good luck with it.

Since you already said you don't have the bank information to refund his payment, then you've done about as much as could be asked for. And in light of the fact that he has already said he didn't want a refund, I think you are off the hook.
I am surprised you are still using IE6 when it is up to 9.

One thing I will suggest is that you use a system to store your files so that if you have another computer issue, you won't lose your work.

Dropbox.com is one possibility. Or you could use Google Docs. (I'm sure there are other solutions, as well.)

This computer is super old. It's a Latitude D610, and it's running the 2002 version of Windows XP. It's not even compatible with the new IE...I tried to upgrade, and it told me I need to upgrade my system, LOL!

You guys have given a lot of suggestions for security software, I see. So, here's a question. Will any of these counteract another? I know that sometimes one security program might override another or they both might stop running if the other is detected.

And as far as falling for a trick...I didn't. I never downloaded the crap, it just showed up. I just thought it was a part of the system because it actually mimics the Windows security center. So, I wasn't aware at first that I needed to be alarmed. I'm not even using the built-in security anymore; I know better now, so if I ever see it again, I'll know something is wrong right away.

Windows XP was released in 2001 :-p It told you to upgrade your Operating System because IE9 wont run on XP. Yeah get a new laptop. I had to look that up and I was going to tell you to run Windows 7 but you wont get the benefit. You rarely need a few different security solutions. For you I recommend MSE

Yes, I explained that in my OP. I contacted all of my clients the first chance I got, but only two of them were understanding. This last guy was just pissed, and didn't care what had happened.

I apologized, sent the articles he'd ordered, and offered a refund. The only thing delaying the refund is him sending me the bank info to have it processed. Banks can't refund wires on the spot; if they could, he'd already have it.

It may have been released in 2001, but my system version says 2002. Either way, it's really old, LOL! If this was my personal PC, then I'd upgrade in a heartbeat. When I do get my own laptop, though, I'm definitely getting something with Windows 7. I may even opt for a Linux system; It's been said that it's a more secure system, and it's not susceptible to the many attacks that target Windows users.

I can't recommend Sandboxie high enough. I didn't download anything either, but still ended up with the virus. I am pretty sure it was some javascript code on a page that gave it to me. I just emptied the "Sandbox" and it immediately disappeared.
