Any experience monetizing a celebrity "fan" site?

Do any of you Warriors have experience monetizing a celebrity fan-type site? By fan-type site I mean a domain with a misspelled celebrities name(one leter removed - as in one of the t's i just removed from letter). More specifically a hot young celebrity (female) that hasn't been to jail 30 times.

I'm just curious as to whether or not this is something to pursue. It's kind of like when someone accidentally types in "gogle" instead of "google", ya know?

It's called "typo-squatting". You might want to read this: Naming rights - Griffith Hack

I've seen this, and I haven't purchased a domain. I was just wondering. It seems as though it may not be a problem if it's in good faith (as in not promoting nude pics and other adult related content) I mean, if it's all positive to the celebs image, what's the problem (I know this might not matter). It seems like a grey area of sorts.

There's nothing grey about it. You want to profit off of somebody else's celebrity name without their permission and there is case law that says that you would be in the wrong. Whether or not the celebrity is wearing a top or not is irrelevant.

That's what all the big gossip magazines do, and I'm sure they don't have the permission. Can I see an example of case law that reflects this?

You would get your domain unregistered really fast.

Better to have a site with a generic name like "celebrities.com" or something similar - that may have gone so don't look it up - but you get the meaning. Magazines sell their publication under their own name, they feature celebrities in there so they are not breaking any copyright law.

I know this is an old thread but the original question was never answered and I am curious as well. What would be the best way to monetize a celeb site?

  • You would monetize with amazon products featuring the celeb and offering a newsletter email subscription where you send news about the celeb and amazon products.

i have much experience in monetizing celebrity sites and i have tried many main stream ways ( adsense, amazon , my own ads ) but what i have found to work the best and can make you daily consistent income is finding a affiliate program that offers celebrity fan quiz's for lead generation. basically you will get paid .50-.70 cents every time someone fills out a quiz. Its a great way to start earning money from any celebrity site.

I have heard that celebrity sites are tough to monetize since people go there looking for free entertainment.

    Fan quizzes - that's a neat idea.

where did you find those affiliate programs?

  • Who is the target audience for this type of site and why are they visiting?

When you know that... you'll realize it's primarily a waste of time. Knowing WHY a person visits a site is the key to deciding if it can be profitable.
