E-mail Marketing: Which has a higher click-thru rate?

1) Text ads or 2) HTML ads (with images) ?

I know some email clients have the inability to open/read HTML code.

So speaking in terms of mass emails, would it be better to just send emails as text or chance the readability of an email by including html and a graphic for the possibility of increasing the click-thru rate?

I know fancy HTML may be good for the eyes and all that, but the text format is actually more familiar to subscribers and thus tend to get higher clickthrough rates, from my own observation. It actually makes it feel like the message is from a friend rather than some im marketer trying to sell something down their throat

It depends on your market and offer.

Test both and you'll know what works best for you, your market, and your offer.

I use a Pop-up opt in form and also have an opt in on the upper right sidebar. And a banner on the lower right side.
Which do you think has more conversions for me?
    The banner lol.
But the emails do work since I get a 2:3 conversion though but the banner get people clicking

I always send both! I based my emails on HTML newsletter templates but always include a text version. I have email address that can only receive text messages to test and they both always look fairly similar.

Most AR companies can't track links in plain text versions so it's hard for me to answer which is better.

    Hope this helps

It matters on your audience, I would recommend HTML ads though, I think they'll get a better ratio.

It really does depend on the market. However, in information marketing, having what seems like an intimate relationship with the customer does extremely help and thus text e-mails are the more natural solution.

Has to be HTML emails - I would think - but I've been shocked by statisticians before.... Who knows KingoftheHeart... Wish I did but I don't... I can tell you this though - everyone is moving to HTML5 (video ready) email templates now, so we should probably go with the trend.... hehe

I would recommend trying both in a split test. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. If you use an ESP like aweber then you can find the answer in a short amount of time as long as you have a decent list size.

No marketing tactics are the holy grail accross ALL industries. You have to take the best practices and what you know and start with that. Never assume, always test. The true way to determine how your audience will respond is to .... see how they respond. Send half of your list text and the other half html. Do this for at least 3-5 emails and tally your results.

It also depends on your offer, if the email they clicked through is congruent with your offer on the web (this is moreso once they click). Also consider a higher click thru doesn't really mean anything if they aren't taking the desired action once they get there. If 10 people click and 5 buy... or 150 people click and one buy... then you have to look at other factors.

Lastly html email that looks like html email seems less personal and more BIG bransish... html email that looks like text email seems more personal. And text email usually gets higher deliverability.
