This is the first I've heard about flipping squidoo lens. I've got tons of lens from 2006 that still hasn't been developed. Some nice keywords.

Why would anyone buy something that they don't have ownership of?

The same with domain names. We don't own them. We are just leasing them from domain registers. The only difference is that domain name can be develop as we see fit. Lens is more limited to development.

And yes, we can sell squidoo lens. I've sold a few recently for $5-$25 .

I do believe you can sell your lenses, although I have no idea what the Squidoo team thinks about it all. I know to get Giant Squid status at Squidoo you aren't allowed to be buying and selling your lenses.

I have never done it myself so I can't help you much. I believe Tiffany Dow has done it, not sure if she still does, and has written an ebook on it, you might want to get a copy of that.

Last time I looked, Squidoo allowed the transfer of lenses to another person. Quite a few people were selling these "transfers". Haven't been there in a long time, so don't know if that's still the case.

Yes you can still transfer lenses, I transferred one of my lenses from one account to another a couple of weeks ago.

It's fine to transfer, I just don't know what the rules are regarding selling. I think I would look into their TOS just to make sure you aren't breaking any rules before selling any lenses.

  • It's quite common when you use an outsourcing worker to produce the lenses for you. They produce each lens in their own account, and then transfer it to you when it's done.

It's not terribly profitable now, however.

You're competing with a load of people on Fiverr who are creating lenses and selling them for you (for $5 a lens).

You might want to download Tiffany Dow's "FLip that Lens ebook" in her social marketing website... Just go to Tiff's main website, there should be a link in there somewhere.

I believe it is part of her "Squidoo Guide" that she used to sell, but not anymore due to the constant changes in Squidoo.

I just downloaded it for free. No strings attached.

I always get my lenses at fiverr... So i'm sure this has put a ceiling on the market... Someone mentioned 5-25 bucks... I say that's fair for both parties...

However, I wouldn't expect much more than that...

Squidoo lenses can rank very well and bring quite a bit of money. I think one that earns $50-$100/month could be worth something to the right buyer. I would never consider buying one though, it's just way too risky. It could get slapped by Google, reported for spam or whatever and it's GONE.

Buying an aged lens with good PR/ranking would be kinda cool however I definitely wouldn't pay much considering you don't really own it. Different from the domain example as mentioned earlier - you are leasing it and you do have some form of ownership over the domain as long as your "rent" is paid.

With squidoo your buying something from a third party who really posses no ownership of the item in the first place.

If you have a lens that has a good amount of traffic and revenue, I don't think you'd have a tough time finding a buyer in the BST sections of forums.

Squidoo may be third party action but its an authority site that I'm sure will take many people years to develop had they done it using regular domain names and hosting. Squidoo still remains as a powerhouse. Oh and if anyone looking for aged lens let me know I've got lots of them from 2006.

People are still buying and selling lenses on Squidoo. It is not currently against TOS. As far as I know you can't transfer a WIP (unpublished) lens.

You can buy basic cookie-cutter lenses for $5. Sometimes they are older, or have traffic already, and then it's $10 and up. Custom lenses with actual unique, useful content will cost you more. There's a lens valuation tool here:
    Valuation for Squidoo Lenses [Beta]

I'll cheerfully buy aged lenses in my niches for $5-$10. How much would buying an equivalent backlink on some other site cost you?

Good tip. Not to get into a SEO discussion (wrong forum) but there is many an aged high-PR lens out there. I have one that's 3 or 4, with more traffic than many a niche site I built, ha ha. Not selling though, far too useful

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

There are other ways to monetize a lens than to sell them outright?

Ever thought of leasing your lens to someone interested?

I have a sneaking suspicion that selling a lens is not allowed based on TOS....

I might be wrong... but can I sell someone else's property?

If I have usage rights to it, yes sure I can now lease portion of the property...but selling...may be not.

I've sold nearly 400 Squidoo Lenses in the past one year, and do not agree with you Alyona. Squidoo Lenses, if properly done, have the potential to rank well - even for very competitive keywords.

It all depends on the quality of the Lens, its monetization potential, the price you pay, and the improvements you make which matter.

I've never done a Press Release, however, I am sure you won't be very impressed with me - if I were to write off PR's completely, specially when I know so little about them.

There's a good market for flipping Squidoo lenses and for good reason:
    • Tier 1 lenses have averaged approx $36/month in revenue sharing from Squidoo and that number has been growing. Tier 1 lenses have seen over $47/month the past two months payout. There are people who collect Tier 1 lenses just for that monthly revenue.
    • Squidoo lenses age nicely and I've been able to get a lens to a PR3 in just a couple of months with very little effort. I have had lenses reach as high as PR5 and I can put a dofollow backlink with the anchor text of my choice to any of my own sites. Combine a nice PR with a monthly revenue stream and you have backlinks for other sites that earn you money every month instead of backlinks that cost you money every month.
    • You can buy lenses for as little as $5 and - if you know what you're doing - have them paying for themselves within days. I bought a lens for $5 just a couple of weeks ago. The lens has already earned over $7 in Amazon commissions this month and is sitting at a Tier 2 which would earn about $5/month based on recent payouts. I haven't spent any time or money on updating or backlinking the lens and it's already earned more than I paid. Even if it slips to Tier 3, it will make $.40-.50/month which would have eventually covered the cost even if it didn't have Amazon sales to boot. When it reaches a decent PR, it can become a backlink for something else, too.
Squidoo's TOS does not prevent selling lenses. They used to have a section in the SquidU forum for offering lenses for sale but they've done away with that section. The lensmasters I know who flip lenses have established themselves on FB with links to their own sites set up to take lens orders and list their lenses that are available for sale.
