What would you do with 200 visits/day to this site?

So I have an article directory that's getting an average of 200 unique
visitors per day.

It's hosted on HostGator.

HostGator has decided to shut down the hosting on it until I upgrade
from shared hosting to a dedicated server since "it's taking up too
much CPU usage".

I've just renewed the hosting for another year.

What would YOU do with the site?

...turn it into a... ???

P.S. The adsense income isn't enough to justify upgrading to
a dedicated server. Any ideas?

      have a problem.

        Excuse me...Time out...

Obviously I have not made myself clear enough and we're
going down the wrong path here...

This thread wasn't about how it's BS that I got shut down...
it's "What would you do with a site that used to be an article
directory that is getting about 200 visits/day?"...

But, since everyone seems to be distracted by the fact that
200 visits caused my account to be shut down, I'll address that
right now: Yes, you're all right. 200 visits a day on shared hosting
isn't anywhere NEAR enough to get "shut down" because of "too
many visits". As some have already mentioned, the reason it got
shut down wasn't because of the amount of traffic, it was because
of the amount of CPU resources it was using up.

The article directory script the site was using is Article Friendly.

With that being said, I've contacted Jan (the script admin/creator)
on his support forum, and not only has he been very prompt with
replying but he has also offered a great solution to the problem.
He's come out with a caching update for the script that will
eliminate approximately 90% of the resources it used to use.

So I'm in the process of updating the script with that caching
addon and am planning on keeping the article directory. Host
Gator has also been great and very patient with me. They've
granted me IP-level access to the site so I can work on it until
        I get the upgrade finished.

So, even though the original question and point of the thread
never did get answered/addressed, it doesn't matter any more
at this point since I've decided to keep the article directory and
not convert it into another type of site (although I may wonder
what people's answers WOULD have been...)

That sounds very strange, I have a site with 600-800 uniques a day and had not had any problems, the only time they complained was when I started using the YARP plugin which is very resource intensive.

Why didnt they recommend VPS compared to dedicated? .. may be thats something which you could consider.

  • I would tell them I want my money back for the renewal and get a new host. 200 uniques a day would hardly stall a good PC being used as a server.

Let me ask you this, though: exactly how big is your article directory?

    That smells like bull****.

I have a network getting over 20k hits a day on a Godaddy grid account, and I haven't had any problems. Ditch hostgator.

Sometimes, 200 users can generate more traffic than 500. Depends on many things...
You can change your hosting provider. I'm sure you'll find other good offers.
    Good luck!

It won't be the 200 visits he gets a day that's causing problems but the amount of resources his article directory is taking up, They are huge resource hoggers.

We've had to ban article directories at cashmoneyhosting simply because some of them were so big they were causing the servers to slow which essentially meant a lot of downtime for other people on that server.

If you want to run article directories you are going to have to get your own server to run it on as you'll find more and more hosts won't run them on shared space

    What script are you using?

It sounds like a part of the script is being a resource hog.

    You may be getting spammed.
