What type of content do you give your list?

I am in the beginning stages of list building and am curious about what kind of content to send out to my list. I hear a lot of people saying to send out other people's articles and what not so that I can work on everything else that my business needs, but isn't that promoting your competitor? Surely no one is in the niche that isn't selling something so I'm kind of looking for an upside other than not having to create stuff on my own. Any thoughts?

Why not create your own information? Like reports, videos etc?

I send reports, videos, html templates. Anything that can be useful.

Your list members want to build a relationship with you
and some of them will appreciate your approach to the
      subject area.

If you're only sending out content written by other
people - that they can get elsewhere - then why would
they want to remain subscribed to your list?

It's much better to choose a subject you're knowledgable
about and can really help your subscribers with.

Then give your subscribers some tasters of the value you
offer - but don't give away the farm.

Focus on building the relationship between you and your
subscribers by giving them relevant information and offers
as well as sharing some of your personality too.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

      Shaun

    Remember to give them incentives

People in lists like it when they receive quality stuff. Otherwise, they'll just unsubscribe themselves from your list, if all you're offering is for your own benefit. Many marketers I know have the mistake of sending offers after offers, annoying their leads so much they would just unsubscribe, or just treat it as junk mail altogether. You need an information transfer both to your lead, and back to yourself.

Provide your list with VALUE. Whatever that is. If you do choose to use other's information that is fine too. They are on YOUR list and YOU are the resource. If you are using other's content at least try and use syndicated content you can place on YOUR site. So this way you control the eyes and where they go and you train your list to come back to your site. Over all ... yes... you are building a relationship. Treat them like you would friends and associates.

You can send any thig that is of value and relevent to your readers.

This maybe your articles, somebody elses articles aslong as you leave their details in the articles.

Send them to your blog, your youtube video or anybody's video that is relevant that will be of vale to your list.

Use plr, you can break down a plr ebook into articles, break up plr video course to x amount of videos to send to your list as an e-course (just check your rights before doing this)

The first thing you need to determine is why you are building the list. Is it to follow up and promote a single item? Build a long term relationship so that you can direct their attention to where you want it? Build/demonstrate authority and expertise? Even hammer them with offers until they buy or die (unsubscribe)?

Once you know that, it will be easier to decide what will serve that purpose.

For example, I was once on a list used to sell a piece of software. The follow up sequence focused on what and why to do that particular task and how to do it without having to buy the software.

Seems counterproductive, right? Why tell people how to do something without buying the product you're promoting?

The guy was crazy like a fox. He did, indeed, show a method for accomplishing the task without having any extra tools. In excruciating step-by-step detail.

By the time I'd worked through the process once, I could not click the buy button fast enough. Of course, there was a helpful link to that buy button in the PS of every message...

If you want to build for the long term, don't be afraid to include content from other people from time to time. Add your own commentary to put that content in context for your members. No sane reader expects you to be the one and only source for good information, and many distrust people who proclaim that they are.

Set the purpose for the list right from the beginning, tell people what that purpose is, and furnish them valuable content that serves that purpose.

Building on John's great response, I like to build a dedicated campaign around demand for a solution that links to one or more of my products first - I have given away reports, 7-12 part minicourses, videos and video series and an e-course with a follow-up series of teleseminars.

The more focused you are on the specific demand and the more active you are in helping the customer achieve their desired result, the better your content campaign will be when targeting sales of specific product.

After the initial campaign finishes, I continue to "drip" content (interviews, case studies - just did one of these this morning, personal tips and experiences, reports, and videos...about 3/4 of these link back to a relevant product or service, some are my own, some are others)

In addition - some of these posts are very detailed and long, many are medium and some are just really short tips, links to freebie downloads or straight promotions.

I also do a weekly blog round-up picking 2-3 of my top blog posts from the week and summarize them for my list driving traffic back to the blog.

        Hope that helps

        Jeff
