Question about press release content?

I have to admit I haven't been doing much in the way of press releases in the past. But I realize they play an important role and can have huge impacts.
My question (that may be obvious to you guys) is, can you write PRs on other people's companies and whatnot (and have them be accepted by syndicators of course)? For example, if I have a tech blog, can I write and submit PRs about Apple's latest product?
If so, here's a followup. Doesn't that mean that if you have a "new'sy" site; you can basically submit all your articles as PRs? Seems like an easy way to get some heavy SEO.
