Do Any Of You Use Press Releases As A Main Source Of Traffic?

Hey warriors,

Do any of you consistently use press releases as one of your main sources of traffic?

If yes then how does that traffic usually convert compared to other more common traffic sources like article marketing and video marketing traffic?

Please let me know.

Press releases are only useful for very important updates, in my opinion. If the update is not major, I would reserve it for a simple blog post versus PR release.

I'm with Tim on this one. I think, to some extent, press releases have become one of the "shiny objects" that marketers are focusing on right now. Instead of reserving them for actual news events and announcements, many people are using them for every little thing. That's simply not what they were designed to do.

When used correctly, press releases can give you a surge in traffic. But I can't see how you could use them as a sole source of traffic (unless, you really do have that much actual news to announce every day - but most people don't)

        Thanks for your thoughts Nicole.

But couldn't someone just keep making the same announcement for a while but target different keywords in their niche each time?

          James,

I'm not sure how you would do that. Let's say you're using a press release to announce your new product. Once the release has gone out, the announcement is over... people who want to link to it, cover it, or visit your website to learn more will do it. How would you go about announcing it again? Even if you use different keywords, the story is the same.

As a former news anchor, I'm a big believer in the power of press releases. I've seen firsthand how they can take off and get attention. But, they have to be genuinely newsworthy to do it. I think press releases are a great way to get some attention for your new product/website/service/development. However, I don't think they should be your *only* source of traffic (after all, it's not good to put all of your eggs in *any* basket )

          James,
I'm with Nicole on this one. Making the same announcement over and over isn't going to be effective, IMHO.

This is not always true. In an ideal world, maybe, but probably not in the digital realm.

If you are submitting to automated sites with no moderation, then it is valuable as a backlink, unless Google has de-indexed the site. So, the more you get there, the more low quality backlinks you'll have. But, they'll be backlinks.

If your release is hidden among a gazillion other announcements, then it may not make much difference how many you submit, and you probably need to do as much as your best and most successful direct competitor.

Press Releases are not quite the "new shiny object," but more of a replacement for easy article marketing, which was a replacement for easy link directories, which was a replacement for ...

Only use PRs for major releases, re-releases, grand openings, or major updates or events.

I use press releases occasionally, but not sites like PRWeb. Daniel Tan has an awesome program I picked up here in the Warrior Forum and have been super impressed with it. I am really very happy with the results.

    James,
    It depends on the business.

If you have a business that has events frequently, or has a newsworthy slant to your business model, etc., then you can use press releases often. Not every day, but often.

Edited to add: I think that press releases can be much more effective for a local business for this type of thing.

I use press releases but I would not consider them a *main* source of web traffic.

I use press releases every once in awhile, like when I add a new package, or a new service, but other than using them for major updates to services, I generally just use my facebook or twitter for minor updates or advertisements

Somewhere here on the WF I read that someone recommned a particular tool for submitting a blog to Google...and said it was listed in just two or three days. Do any fellow Warriors know of a good tool for submitting blogs to search engines? thx.
