Just came back from beautiful trip around west Europe (France, Great Britain, Spain). It was perfect

..Ok, let`s go serious now. We have gone through many discussions about using brandnames in domain names and we much or less agree that this is not a good idea. What about celebrities? Let`s take, I don`t know, Roger Federer as an example. Can we use their names in domains? If someone wants to make a fan page or a page about him or something similar. Is this allowed?

e.g. www.rogerfedererfanpage ..

thanks for your opinions

What about people that use them. I am sure there are many of them. Do they ask celebrity for permission or just use their name, without asking anyone?

I came to this question because on one site I found a contest about best fans (you have to send your photo etc..) and there you can also add your youtube videos, fan-pages.. these fan-pages are interesting

many fan pages of their favorite celebs has been created and is fine as long as you don't write anything bad about the person. As for using only their name then you might have problems but adding fan or fanpage is fine if not tm'd.

The bottom line is, the owner of the trademark has the choice of taking legal action or not. In some cases they're correct, in others they're not. From our point of view, it's a risky proposition ANY time you use someone else's trademarked name in your domain name. Whether your usage is permitted by law or not can only be determined by thoroughly investigating each individual case by someone with the authority to do so.

A celebrity fan page often goes unchallenged. But that doesn't mean a year from now it won't change. The more profit you derive from the site, the more of a threat you become to the trademark owner.
