I've been using Prettylink to 'hide' my affiliate link from Google for a while now but everything I read and everyone I talk to seems to be using a redirect .php script instead.

Did something happen to prettylinks and SEO and I managed to miss it?

Well the thing is, google gets a little smarter everyday, and we can't trick ourselves into thinking we will always stay ahead of the guys behind google's algorithims. That being said, google does not like it when you try to hide anything.

Google may not necessarily know what it is you're hiding, but if they cannot see something on your site, google may assume that whatever it is is going to be something you don't want them to see, therefore it's going to negatively affect your rankings.

Google does not hate affiiliate links, they just want your site to also have valuable content to go along with it, the .php coding simply makes it easier for google to see you're not trying to hide anything and if you have valuable content to the user on your site, the hiding your affiliate link will not be a problem.

Also, if you want to focus a little less on SEO, I'm releasing how I market my websites using offline techniques that pull in targeted traffic. If your interested keep an eye on me in the WSO forum.

    Cheers,

A redirect is a redirect no matter what script you use. Prettylink is just another script in the form of an easy to use WP plugin. And it still works very well and is not dead.

Those people are called marketers and they are marketing scripts or have been marketed to and bought the hype.
