Wordpress Advice Please - Transferring site

I am trying to transfer a new website over to the domain I want it to be on. First, I tried to do it in filezilla and my hostgator cpanel, but when I tried uploading all the backup files to the new database for the new domain name, it says completed successfully but 0 queiries. I wasn't even sure what that meant, but it didn't look good, so I checked out the structure and the phpadmin showed nothing there.

So I tried to take a shortcut instead by using managewp to clone the site and transfer that way. Now, it seems to be on the new domain, but the site is out of perspective and no pages besides the home page even show up (I get a 404 Not Found error when I click on menu items).

I'm not sure where to go from here. I think I should probably start over again and try to transfer the files manually, but do I need to "remove" the site first now that I've got this site that doesn't work at that domain?

Sorry if I sound lost, but I am. lol I could hire someone to do this, I guess, but it would be nice to get it done on my own so I can do it again next time around. Any tips are much appreciated.

Thanks!
James

wow, you do sound a bit lost there. Not entirely sure where you have got to but if you have tried to move the WP site I would suggest checking the settings in the new database. By this I mean manually check in the database for any reference to the old domain name and replace it with the new one.

I've transferred some sites and if you just copy the database contents to the new database then the values will still point to the old domain name. Use php admin and search the entire database for your old domain name and which ever tables it matches results in, go into the record and update the old domain name to the new one.

There might be a faster way or some other software but I have found this allows me to get into the admin panel for the new WP site and finish the remaining config in there.

    Good luck.

I've already posted this several times... just can't find my own posts

If you are comfortable with FTP and phpMyadmin (the database manager in cPanel) then it is very simple. You just need to follow the steps, don't take shortcuts, don't skip any of them.

    A) Exporting.
    - download via FTP all the files and folders from the space where the WP install is
    - go to phpmyadmin > find the wp_XXX database > click Export at the top
    - with all the tables selected, data and structure box checked > save as file: it will download a ....sql file to your machine

    B) Installing on the new place
    - upload via FTP all the files and folders
    - phpmyadmin: Import > find the file on your computer > Go
    - find the wp_options table > click and look for the following two rows:
site_url and home - edit them (clicking on the pencil) and type in the new domain: hxxp://example.com (no slash!) - Save it!

    Everything should work.

Note: if you had lots of uploads (media files: images, videos etc.) on the old blog, you will need some additional steps. Let me know, if it's the case.

    • Thanks - not sure if I'm comfortable yet, but working on it.

So, since I already tried cloning the site and failed, do I need to do anything to the new domain first before I transfer all the files and folders over again? Or will the new files just replace the ones I already moved over there?

  • So, I've got all the files moved over to the news site now, and it seems to be working, but...

The theme looks much smaller, which isn't doing it any favors (so it's still a little out of perspective).
typing in MyNewSite/wp-admin brings me to OldSite/wp-admin.
When I click on menu items, they bring me to the pages on the old site.

None of these possibilities were even mentioned in any of the videos, so I'm a little confused...

You didn't change the url in the database to the new site.

      • Thanks for that. You're right - the video I watched didn't have me change those. I did it now, however, and my site is still behaving the same.

It sounds like you are changing the theme from what you were using. When you import the database, you import all the theme options that you chose for the theme you were using. If you've changed the theme, go into any theme options your new theme may have a tinker with them and save it.

If that isn't the problem, pm me tomorrow and I'll see what's going on. Going offline now.

Agree with outsourcing. I've never tried moving my Wordpress sites because I know someone who does this for me for $10, and she's completely honest and reliable. I'm not very tech-y so $10 is a great price for saving me hours of angst and tearing at my hair.

Well, it's very easy to do and the beauty of doing it yourself is you've learned a pretty neat skill. He's already done it, just needs tweaking.

The only skill required for outsourcing it, is sending someone else your money.

you need to first ftp a new wordpress to the new domain,
back up your old database from your old domain or hosting using cpanel and phpMyadmin

create an empty database and restore the database on your new domain or hosting account by using the phpmyadming import fucntion

change your database settings on the wp-config.php file. username, db name and password,

and that's it. If I do it, It should be less than 30 mins. PM me if you are interested.
