A Few Questions On List Building

As the saying goes, 'Money is in the list', but I believe that the money is in the relationship you have with your list. To this point I would like to ask fellow Warriors a few questions.

1. What is your ratio of non-promotional to promotional emails?

2. When do you start promoting to your list?

3. How often do you mail your list?

I understand the responses would differ according to the market, but I am still interested in knowing what is working for you.

Thanks,

Vijay

    1. I do 1:1
    2. Right from the start. Why wait?
    3. Once per week or twice if there is a great offer!

The key is to make sure you send your list only high quality products. If you send them junk, then they won't be on your list for long! Try to help them succeed by only sending them useful material that they will find valuable

Hey Vjay here is your answers to your questions:

    1. Always write promotional emails whether they are in a form of a testimonal, story, or a direct response. You do this at least twice a day. One morning, one evening

    2. start promoting to your list as soon as you get a lead. If they optin then they want to know more. Hopefully what they seen on the outside before they signed up is directly related the products you are offering

    3. twice a day like I said above

I cover this in my wso. check out my signature section

    Thanks for the responses fellas.

Glopin, I do understand that each market is different, but do your subscribers complain when you send them mails twice a day?

I am currently sending a message every two days and I don't typically promote until I have delivered good value upfront. But it is interesting to hear different perspectives.

You could do 2 or 3 content emails followed by a pitch, as well as maybe including a soft sell by recommending a product/service etc within a content based email.

Just test it - and see how best your list responds.

Also you could always invest a small amount of money and buy Ryan Deiss' Sneaky email tricks course. He & Perry belcher share alotta great stuff on how to get the very best results from your email marketing campaign which ranges from how many links in your email, where to get the best subject line headlines, what time you should email etc

Though its not necessary - you could pick up alotta useful advice. I have it myself. Its great.

You are going to have complaints no matter what. Just something you'll have to learn with. Do what works for you. Are you putting buyers on your list? I think you need to provide a little content for them even with an offer.

For example, if you are promoting a Facebook offer, you could give a little info up front before telling them to check out the offer for more in depth training.

hi moreno here, the way to set up your campaign it's very important ex.: if your prospect opt-in because of an offer you made about a wordpress blog tool, then you know he is interested on WP tools , he has a blog or he is starting one , the follow up should be related to the topic. if you have different opt-in form with different topic then set related follow up mail for every one. 2 mail a day would do, 12 hours in between ,. don't try to fool peoples or they will unsubscribe fast, give them the honest , best you can ,treat them as king ,they are gold for you , don't forget you will have to work to find new best products to stand out from the millions mail they already receive. First mail , first day, anyway it's all automated by your autoresponder , if you set thinghs right before.

    About 2 (non-promotional) to 1, usually.

Immediately: there's some (a little) promotional material included with the immensely valuable "free report" I send them as the incentive for signing up. And sometimes I redirect them after the sign-up to something promotional. But by email, usually in the third email (that's within a week of their subscribing).

Usually on days 1, 3, 6, 10 and 15 and thereafter at 5-day intervals. For ever.

Indeed ... I've done various extents of testing with only 4 of my 8 niche-lists, but I'm now using more or less what's above for all of them.

I'm not in the "IM-advice" or "MMO" niches.

I'll probably use more or less what's above in future niches, too.

Although my niches themselves are entirely unrelated, I'm targeting (broadly speaking) the same demographics of potential customers within every niche I try, and I suspect they're all "more or less the same sort of people" in some ways that actually matter more than what the niche itself is. From my customer demographics (and from some testing), I'd confidently expect both a lot of unsubscriptions and a reduced long-term income if I sent daily email.

    Hi Vijay,

My sentiments pretty much mirror the rest of the comments, but I definitely agree you should email right away. I even like to add something referring to a future email so they expect to get another message from me. For example, "Tomorrow I will send you some more info about..."

I also agree mixing the messages is important as well. I try to give 2-3 a week of pure content and mix it with some promotional content. I like to shoot for 1 message a day so that expectation has been created in their mind.

I have seen the best results when I do it this way.

    Good Luck!

I like the idea of emailing consistently from the start, not being over-the-top with promotion but being up front with your list about your intent while overdelivering great content.

Depending on how you define "promotional", you could say that every email has a promo of some kind in it. Often, that promo is for a freebie or a pice of content, but I want people on my lists to get in the habit of clicking links and leaving their inbox. And I want them doing it with positive expectations.

If you define "promotional" as a straight on pitch for a product, I don't use any kind of strict ratio. I go by what's appropriate for the best interests of my list members.

One thing I was advised, and it has proven accurate, is to offer some type of promo at least as often as the non-promo, pure content emails. You do not want to condition your list members to expect everything for free.

From another context, "if milk is free, why buy the cow?"

Usually with the screen they see after confirming their subscription.

It depends on the list. If it's an e-course, I try to space the emails as it makes sense to do so. That might mean every day for a few days, with a break if I ask them to do some kind of homework, then as needed to support the course. Once the course is completed, about once a week.

If it's a newsletter/ezine, I mail according to the schedule they signed up for, with additional broadcasts as needed. I make sure they know they will be receiving these added emails from the beginning, so they expect them.

I had success on using the email sequence from "List Whisperer" of Michel Fortin.

You'll get different advice because people are from different niches.

For list whisperer, they also consider non-IM or non-Make money online market.

For some reason, I can't find the 'Thank You' button for all of you guys (maybe because I am new???)

Alexa, thank you so much for the detailed response.

John, your point of conditioning people to click on links is something I have not thought about. I have to test this by giving my subscribers multiple links in the message.

JJorana, I will take a look at List Whisperer and Zero thanks for mentioning Ryan's product.

Don't send out emails every 2 days just for the sake of sending something out. Definitely make sure there is value in every email you send to keep your subscribers happy.

The more contact you have with your list the better, but don't over contact your list, 3 -4 times a week is enough. Try asking your list for feedback on a topic to get them involved.
