Publishing new headlines

Hello,

I was wondering if it was legal for me to publish a news source's headline? I won't publish the actual news content myself, I'll redirect the user to the news source.

The trouble is, it's financial news, so they're quite protective about it because they charge megabucks for the content and they have contacted me to say I'm displaying it without a license, but I'm not publishing the content, only the headline, which I think is different.

I mean, that's all Google News does, right? Newspapers (for example) can publish each other's headlines.

By any chance does anyone know where I might stand from a legal perspective?

I can't possibly understand why a news source would mind that you send them additional (incremental) traffic.

Also it would seem that using the headline and NOT reprinting the whole article falls in the realm of "fair use".

However, as I'm not a lawyer and not qualified in give legal advice ....

You should ask an Intellectual Property lawyer for an opinion.

Which ... depending on the size and arrogance of the new bureau who's complaining, may not matter (cause they may sue you anyway)
