Quick tech tip for HostGator Nameservers

Hi everyone,
I just ran into a little bit of a nuisance that I figured out and wanted to share it with everyone so you don't waste the time that I just did.

Short story: if you use HostGator for hosting, keep your cPanel style set to HG or you won't see your name servers!

And the Novel:

I generally buy my domain names through GoDaddy, but don't like to use them for hosting. Instead, I host through HostGator and simply point the domains from GoDaddy to my HostGator DNS (domain name servers for noobs).

Anyway, it's usually an incredibly fast and easy process, but for this particular hosting account, I wasn't sure what my name servers were. Normally I see them in the left hand column in the home of cPanel, but for this account, I couldn't find them ANYWHERE. I didn't want to have to go search my documentation or welcome email. The DNS info should be right there but it wasn't.

Turns out, if you change your cPanel style to any style besides 'HG' (a special cPanel style just for HostGator), you won't see the name servers in the column on the left. As soon as I set my style back to HG, presto! There were my name servers, ready to be copy/pasted into GoDaddy.

I'll admit that I felt sort of lame when I finally figured it out, but that's how internet stuff goes sometimes. Something you've done a million times and should only take 2 seconds sometimes takes 15 minutes! I hope I can save at least one person those 15 minutes...

Have fun and work hard!

I've never come across that before, although I've never tried changing the style.

I usually find that leaving the default setting is best in most cases.

Good advice. I find the HG style to be a bit busy, and didn't care for the large icons. I like just getting in and doing what I need to do then getting out, so I liked a text based style. It seems strange to me that none of the other styles include something so useful and basic as DNS info.

Oh well, I'm sticking with the default from here on out!
