Is this Worth Me Doing?

Alright warriors

I have currently got a lot of times on my hands and I was wondering if this is something that is worth me considering? Bascially I would like to offer a transcribing service but of videos that people have got that doesnt come with the actual transcription..

I don't know if that is stupid idea or not. Not sure if a lot of people out there would at all be inerested..

I currently doing it myself transcibing about 6 Camtastia videos to written text in word... And I just thought would other people want/need that service??

Or am I just being stupid again

    I think you've got a good idea there. Not sure what kind of volume you'd get but transcribing is definitely something people pay for and don't usually want to do themselves. Just my thoughts.

      I certainly don't think you're being stupid. If you enjoy transcribing and are good at it then I believe you have a highly marketable skill.

      If you go to freelancing sites like Elance.com you always find people asking to have things transcribed, so I don't see why you couldn't turn it into a business model.

      It sounds like something that could bring in a nice part-time income right from the get-go, and maybe turn into a full-time business if you market it properly.

    That's a great idea. If you are good at it then you can certainly build an empire with it. There are many frelancing sites which can be of great help. Nothing is hard or stupid. As long as you have the passion and a positive attitude then you are good to go.

      I think it's a great idea.

      I see demand all the time for it on freelancing sites as Lindsey and Twailer have already mentioned.

      Clearly though, it will be a lot easier for you to make money out of this if there is some "passion" there - by the way you are talking it sounds like there is!

    Definitely a possibility -- both for product owners and those who have bought videos without a transcription. Reach out to, or at least remind product owners about, the hearing impaired market... there's millions in the US and Canada. I refuse to knowingly buy videos that don't have transcription.

    Transcription of all types is a service in demand. Check out Craigslist in the writer's gigs section for all the major US cities. I've seen lots of ads looking for just the service you're talking about. Good luck.

    As a transcriptionist for 20+ years, I can tell you that it is definitely big business. Not everyone has the time or wants to sit and watch a video; some people like to take a transcript with them, others use them as a bonus for special projects, or just to offer their customer a hard copy.

    if you wind up doing this, be sure to run the results through a spell checker.
    A grammar checker might also help you catch the homonyms that are misused.
