Silly question but ... do you leave comments on old blogs?

Hello!

I have recently started blog commenting. Is is worth leaving comments on blogs where the last comments or posts was a few years back, or is it a waste of time?

Thanks for your replies

Even old blogs can get traffic. I have a couple of old blogs that I haven't touched in 2+ years, but they have a lot of Google love and they get search engine traffic.

I wouldn't comment on only old blogs, but one or two wouldn't hurt.

I don't, because if comments haven't been accepted on a particular post for a number of months, it's likely mine won't be accepted either. I always check to see if comments are relatively recent before posting.

That's a twisted logic... I have an old blog and it has tutorials written 3-4-5 years ago. I didn't post on it for more than a year.

However, people find many of those posts by googling and come, read and comment; e.g. ask a question. Although it could be that the previous comment was posted months ago.
        (I even answer those questions...)

Twisted logic? Not really. Just because YOU approve and answer comments on posts made years ago doesn't mean that everyone does.

I've found (from experience), that usually when blogs haven't been posted on for a year or more, the comments don't get approved. Sure, some might, but I prefer to put my time into commenting on blogs where the blog owners are actively approving comments and interacting with their readers.

There's no downside, though, Hamida, even when people don't, is there?

For me, finding the blog in the first place is the time-consuming and difficult part.

Once I've done that, I'll certainly offer a value-adding comment while I'm there, without worrying about these details. There's no downside.

Maybe this varies from niche to niche, and you have so many more available to be found than I do, in the first place, that you can afford to be pickier about them?

              Hello Alexa!

As I have previously mentioned before I highly value your input. However, when time is in short supply, without being picky, I would like to focus on blogs where my comments have got a chance of being accepted.

On a thread in WF someone submitted this formula to find blogs:

site:.com inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "keywords"

Although I have found many high PR blogs this way, the problem I have encountered is that many are "old" (last posts or comments from 2007,2009,2010) but very few from this year.

I wonder if someone can add to this formula to show 2011 posts/comments?

You could always try just putting 2011 on it:

site:.com inurl:blog "2011" "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "keywords"

    • If the blog allows comments I will leave one if I can think of something relevant to add. Especially if it's a high PR blog page.

...regardless of how long the last comment/post was made?

Actually if that blog is autoapproved blog then you can leave comment and get a backlink that is indexed faster than others.

You came to know whether that blog is autoapproved or not only after posting your comment. So you need to spend time too..

The reality is that you can't reliably tell the answer to this question, in any individual case, and it's just a question of whether it's collectively a worthwhile activity, and even then you can't realistically prove whether you've got that right, anyway.

In my opinion, it's worth doing, and I do it.

If there is new content, but old comments, I would leave a comment. If everything is old, then I wouldn't. I might subscribe for updates to see if the person comes back to the blog, but that would be the most I'd do.

It depends on how active the blog looks and if you think your comment is likely to be approved or even seen, but in most cases it is worth it I think.

You need to see if they are still accepting comments or not. Most blogs make you wait for approval for comments. Dead blogs are less likely to have someone approving comments on them.

      Why?

Why not just leave a value-adding comment and see what happens?

  • Think alexa is right, the hard part is finding blogs, especially if you don't use any software.

I do, so I have a list of 50k auto-approve blogs, and a list of blogs in my niche. Another good way of looking for relevant blogs is to use the CommentLuv site, using their search bar you can find other commentluv blogs.

    Plenty in their system.

Tip: The main keyword doesn't have to be on the page to be relevant. If instead, the keyword is a more broad version or sub-niche of your keyword, and google displays that keyword when searching on the free google keyword tool, then that counts as relevant too.

    For example:

You're looking for blogs to do with bass (the fish), and you come across a site that uses the keyword "fish" a lot but no mention of the word bass.

You then see other fish names used, and even examples of "how to cook fish", "catching fish more frequently" and "finding great spots for fishing. Those would all be relevant, regardless of whether the page contains your keyword or not.

2nd Tip: And it's so simple I don't see how so many people fail to do this: Read the content, and then reply accordingly as if you were someone genuinely interested and not looking for a backlink at-all.

Put yourself in the shoes of the writer, and the reader. What sort of comments would they like to see?

(on the subject of choosing better fishing spots)

"Nice, great post, it has benefited me greatly"

    or

"Good tips, though I don't fish, my cousin does hassle me all the time to go fishing. I've gone with him several times, and every single time he has either caught pathetically sized fish, or has had no luck at-all.

Maybe the next time I go with him I can show him up by putting some of those tips into action, eh bill? I'll let you know how it goes (should I decide to go with him)"

PS. Takes me all of 5-10 minutes to read the content, and appropriately reply with a relevant and useful comment.

You wouldn't have to reply like above, that one would be how I would reply, because I don't fish, but my cousin does on occasion ask, and I do on occasion go with him.

If instead you do fish, or feel the writer has missed something, you could mention it in your comment.

If the comments are a few years old then that generally means that people aren't visiting the blog or are no longer interested. However, your comment could spark interest in whatever the blog is about.

I'll leave comments on old blogs as long as other comments are recent. If there are no recent comments then there is a good chance the site has been abandoned and the author isn't approving any comments.
