What is the diffence between hits and pages

I was looking at my AWStats for one of my websites and it gives me unique, visitors, pages and hits. What exactly is a hit and how is it calculated?

    a hit is a response from the server when you request a page. this not necessarily mean a "visit" and may not be counted as actual traffic

      that would be correct, a visit is someone who ACTUALLY lands and views your page - that is when stay time and pages per visit and bounce rate come into play (see where they go after they view, either another page within the site, or bounce, and leave)
