Ok... so I have a site that is not Internet Explorer Friendly. It's a Live Random Cam site... I posted it here a few weeks back.

Next Random Cam

I set up a redirect page, for IE users to download Google Chrome frame.

Of course, I forgot that the redirect would just bring them to this page, after they upgraded their browser.

What's the best way to deal with this.

a) Have a splash page with a note about upgrading if you're using IE
b) Have a note on the side bar?
c) Have a pop up window?

Any better suggestions?

Cheers.

I would suggest a small banner that is in your face!!

But the best would be if you can make it IE compatible.

Personally I won't bother downloading something that is not used often.

Also if you don't change for your customers, your customers won't change for you - they will just move on to someone who does.

Normally I would, but, in this case this seems like the best solution. I've spent enough time on the site already... I see no other alternative.

  • Deja vu. We just had this exact conversation yesterday with a gentleman who is also putting together a random cam site. He hasn't been able to find an IE solution, either. If your site is written in HTML, I might be able to dig out my Bible and find a piece of code that might be useful. It detects the user's browser, and then redirects to the proper page based on that.

If you go broadcasting your sites, and they're a good idea, on sites like these, then chances are someone will copy it. I decided to ask fellow warriors about mine, as I dont see a big money making potential from it, was more of a fun project.

In future, be more careful where you post your sites, if you don't want them copied.

Also, for the IE problem, have you looked into "Google Frame"?

There is nothing impossible in the world of computing. There is someone out there that is probably trying to break the code already.

I would invest my time if it was worth the hassle

It was more of a fun project, that I put more time into than I wanted. Right now, I'd just like a quick fix.

It's not really a money maker, so, concentrating on other projects...

Their's are not the first random cam sites on the web, nor will they be the last, I'm sure. :p There's plenty of room on the internet for 2 more cam sites. I know of very few IMer's that don't look at 'competitors' sites for ideas to implement on their own. I've done it myself.
