Annoying backlink problems

I'm finding backlink checkers really unreliable and i don't know why.

I will build some backlinks and they will not appear for sometime time meanwhile the backlinks that i currently have will sometimes randomly drop off back and forth.

Then today i find my work recently paid off as my C class IP backlinks doubled including some .edu domains - Great.

Fast forward a few hours and i checked again only to find my backlinks have more than halved again????

what the hell is going on can anybody explain this to me?

What backlink checkers are you using Matt?

I'm not sure where many of them actually get their information from

      I have the same problem.
I have yet to have 2 or more checkers provide me the same results -
Even if I am checking them at the exact same time.

I know it's tedious, but I know of no better way at this time:
When I do a back link, either via link exchange or one-way, I enter it into a spreadsheet. Then I go back once a week until I see my link is showing where it needs to. Each time I check, it's notated in the spreadsheet - so I know the status of each link.

I do not know how these backlink checkers work. However, if there is a problem with a node or server at any given time, that may be why backlinks won't show up at the time of checking. *shrugs*

Does anyone know of a backlink checker that is Accurate and Consistent?

SEO Book has a page of link tools, some of which are pretty useful:
