Best Way To Offer A Customer Instant Download for E-Book/Audio/Video (Thanks as always)

Hi Fellow Warriors:

I hope the weekend is going well.

Lately I've gotten a lot of requests to make available E-Books/Audio/Video products for sale on line and I want to do this so the customer gets instant gratification (no waiting after purchase) and it is not complex for a computer idiot like me, too expensive, and or limits me in a file size. Most of the products are very small in file size but one is 64MB.

Obviously for my rock and roll books the on-line book sellers take care of this on their end but when researching how to sell the other products today two sites have pitfalls.

1) Click 2 Sell- Customer service was very nice/fast answering a question but I was told by 2 different employees if a customer wants a refund (which I would always offer anyway) I get charged 30.00 each time by Click 2 Sell even if the product is 3 cents. That seems very excessive.

2) E-Junkie- Can't take advantage of the trial period because the basic package would not allow any file size greater than 50MB and if this matters (please tell me) not all monthly packages allow downloads from any website.

What do you fine Warriors use? It is important to me that any customer can purchase something 24 hours a day and receive the product the second the payment is authorized.

Thank you for your thoughts and knowledge. As always the second I get back on the computer I always reply and thank those that offered good advice.

Enjoy the evening,
Craig

  • Paypal is free. 2checkout and Clickbank require a start-up fee but they're not that expensive. All are just a piece of code to copy and paste.

      Hi Bradley:

      Thanks for quick reply.

Sorry about my lack of tech skills, could you explain a bit more about the PayPal option?

If I were to use PayPal am I uploading the products someplace else and when you sell them through PayPal it generates a code that the customer clicks on after buying to download?

Once I set up the product through PayPal say it is ABC E-Book 9.00 would the code be available forever as long as I have uploaded the book someplace and the customer gets instant access?

      Thank you

A quick, low cost solution is Box.net | Online file sharing, content management, collaboration

They have speedy servers, so your customers can download even large files pretty quickly. It's about $10/month for all the space you'd need for your project. Just create a "Buy Now" button from within your Paypal account. There's an option when creating the button to set customization. Just put your box.net download URL in the window for successful payment redirection when creating your Paypal button.

You should really check out DeliverMyFile.com

It works really well, will integrate with Paypal, Payspree and others and has served me well.

It is pennies to run. Really...pennies and your files are secured. The customer gets an immediate e-mail upon payment with a secure download link which will expire at a time of your choosing and can only be accessed by the number or IP addresses of your choosing and downloaded only the number of times of your choosing.

Set it and forget it. Very, very simple to work with.

This coupon gets you $2 of free credit when you sign up which is ample to test the system out:

      Hi Barry:

      Thank you for the reply.

Would the steps be the file is uploaded to Deliver My File and it would give me a link. I then create in PayPal the price for the product and would I then be able to put the link to Deliver My File so the customer can go to the site?

Is it hard to use the PayPal options when I set this up?

How large of a file can you upload to Deliver My File?

      Thank you for your time,

Just make sure you ignore the calculations on the system comparison page where they compare products - they've gotten the DLGuard calculations totally wrong, and have manipulated the numbers to make it look more expensive than their own system.

What they've done is highly unethical in an effort to make their system look cheaper. I'll run the correct figures here:

They mention DLGuard support/upgrades are $67 per year. If you renew when your support/upgrades expire, then it's actually $47 per year, as you get a $20 discount for keeping it current.

That's if you want to renew at all - you don't have to, it's not required in any way.

They've also added (expensive) website hosting costs into the DLGuard package, which again seems to be an effort to make DLGuard look more expensive than their own system. They haven't added this cost for the other systems. That is not a DLGuard expense, and it's an expense you'll have with the other systems too.

So to make the comparison fair, hosting costs need to either be added to all system calculations, or none.

So to do a REAL comparison:

DLGuard, unlimited files, unlimited sizes, incluing keeping your support/upgrades up to date: $3.92 per month

DLGuard, unlimited files, unlimited sizes, if you choose not to renew support/upgrades after 1 year: $0 per month

DeliverMyFile, 1 Product, 1 sale per day, small file (5mb), cheap product ($17): $0.93 per month

DeliveryMyFile, 1 Product, 2 sales per day, medium file (50mb), medium price ($47): $5.06 per month

      DeliverMyFile, 1 Product, 2 sales per day, mid-large file (100mb), mid-large price ($97): $8.80 per month

DeliverMyFile, 1 Product, 3 sales per day, large file (300mb), largish price ($147): $22.53 per month

Now it looks like DeliverMyFile is a pay-per-product basis. I may be wrong about this, but from what I can gather on their website, it is a pay-per-product.

      DLGuard is unlimited products.

DeliverMyFile is obviously targeting beginners or people with a small number of products (ie. 1) and low sales volume. And that's totally fine, it's smart business to focus on a niche market.

DLGuard is a higher upfront cost, however as your business grows, it doesn't cost you any extra.

If you aim to keep your sales figures low, and your file sizes down, then it's quite cost effective.

When your business grows, you'll easily start paying hundreds of dollars per month.

So you need to ask yourself where your business will be in a year, where you want it to grow, how many products you're aiming to sell, how big your files will be (ie. with the increase in things like the sale of videos, audio, and high quality images).

Lastly, what they lable as "Bad" for the DLGuard review is also inaccurate. They say "Any problem is your problem". Nothing could be further from the truth.

That is what customer support is for, and I spend the majority of my day working with clients to make sure their system is running well.

Or if they're talking about hosting provider issues, then it's the host that'll fix this up - that's their job, and most hosts are very good at it.

Self-hosting a script isn't a weakness in any way. A lot of people prefer it instead of relying on 3rd party sites. If you use DeliverMyFile and their website goes down, you're in trouble. If you use DLGuard and the DLGuard website goes down, it doesn't affect you at all.

The last line in their review is a thinly veiled scare tactic: "assuming everything goes smoothly". Of course. That is the same with any system. Any system is good "as long as it runs smoothly".

What they're trying to do is twist a benefit of DLGuard (ie. self hosted, full control) and make it sound negative.

I don't normally respond to websites that run these kind of "weighted" comparions, but DeliverMyFile has stepped way over the ethical line here, and so needs to be addressed.

      cheers

        Hi Sam:

Thank you for articulating your thoughts about the issue.

One thing I would suggest (I have no reason to take any side here) if a company is disparaging you with incorrect data it obviously has and will cost you sales. You should contact the proper organizations so that the deformation doesn't continue.

It is one thing for a company to brag about their strengths but is appalling for them to lie about somebody else weakness.

        Thank you,

          Hi Craig,

I agree completely - data massaging in product comparisons is pretty common, but when a company actually lists untrue data or weights a comparison unfairly then it says the me the company is okay with unethical business practices, it begs the quesiton to me that if their product comparisons are untrustworthy then what else is?, and lastly, it says they don't believe their product is strong enough to compete on an even playing field.

If we were to talk about DeliverMyFile specifically, then this sort of thing is unnessessary. They're obviously targeting people new to internet business, which is fine. They should play to their strenghts, not manipulate data to make people think their system is better for every situation.

I've emailed them, and hopefully they'll either modify the DLGuard comparison with correct data, or more likely they'll just remove it.

Either way is fine, as long as they just don't promote untrue data.

Hopefully I won't have to take it further. I'm not the kind of guy that enjoys this sort of thing, but I do need to protect my business - it's what puts food on my table for my wife and son.

          cheers

            Hi Sam:

Please keep in mind that even if somebody is or is not a citizen of the USA if a company is giving false information they can be in violation of some state/federal laws.

Protect your investment. If you are not sure about the resources you would have available you can send me a private message and I'll give you avenues to pursue.

In the PM I would only need to know if the company is in the USA and if so which state. I always answer all PM/email within 24 hours.

Thanks and glad you have taken the professional approach thus far,

I use paypal, when you are setting up your payment button it has an option to send users to a address after purchase. This is where you would put the web address where users can download your products. But just a warning, have your download page cloaked or use random variables so it won't be easy to access your download page.

      Thanks for the reply.

Is there specific software I would need to cloak the website location where the file would be stored? If so are there free or low cost ones you have had good results with?

I'm really liking Digiresults these days, too. I think others use their system for non-IM products, and it's very painless compared to the frustrating setup I had with Paypal and building my own download pages and all that.

      Hi Zabrina:

      Thank you for the reply.

With Digiresults would that eliminate the need for PayPal?

Would I upload the file to the site/set a price/and get a link for the customers to go to and the rest would be taken care of?

How large of a file can you upload?

      Thank you,

Yes, it does eliminate the need to work with Paypal to set up a button, but you still need to set up your Paypal account to allow Digiresults access so they can pay affiliates and fees properly, and pay you, of course.

Yes, you pretty much do that. You've got automatically generated buy buttons based on the price you have set, so they update when you change the price. There's also a neat dime sale feature I've been playing with, where the price goes up a certain amount (you set) after every certain number of sales (you set).

Hmm... not 100% sure here, let me login to my account. (It's also run by a Warrior here, Andy Fletcher, so I feel somehow safer just 'cause I'm a PM away from the head honcho.)

Oh, I just found out that it says: "Must be a ZIP, must be smaller than 20MB". If you wanted to take advantage of the Paypal and buy button and stuff, you could always use another solution above (like box.net) and put the link to the file download page -- for instance, "http://www.box.net/shared/wr37yete3" -- on the customizable Digiresults-hosted download page. That's what I've done in the past.

This stuff breaks my brain too, but I hope that helps.

          Hi again Zabrina:

          Thanks for the follow-up reply.

One file is very large (64MB) the rest would always be under 20MB.

    Hi Craig,

I'm Sam Stephens, the owner/developer of DLGuard (a download management system that a lot of Warriors use):

DLGuard - Download page protector, create expiring download links

Basically DLGuard is software that runs on your website, and does exactly what you're after.

It'll plugin to the payment systems a lot of people have been talking about. So you set your product up in DLGuard, add your payment system info, and then DLGuard gives you a sales link to paste onto your sales page.

When people click on that link, they go to the payment system to pay, and are then returned to DLGuard.

DLGuard checks to make sure the sale is valid, and if it is, will display a unique download page with secure, unique download links that'll time out in the amount of time or number of download attempts you set.

Your files are hosted on your own website, and so there aren't any file size limits, and you don't need to pay extra like you do with a system like EJunkie.

Everythings on your website, so you've got full control.

Let me know if you have any quesitons about it, I'm happy to help!

    cheers
    Sam
