Have a look at this site Photos and Painted Portraits on Canvas from Canvas Art Studio

What would be the best way to create an almost identical site?

On your own? Or do you mean with the likes of Elance, oDesk ... or maybe with free tools? Not sure what you're really asking here.

  • Unless you have the coding skills yourself, that one is definitely a job for an outsourced professional. That is a very nice site, btw.

I meant what would work best to create a near identical site?

HTML/Flash? What about Drupal or Magento?

And yes, it is a very nice site.

Wow. My cousin in England makes these. I must pass this site on to him.

It's probably best to outsource the development and in your job posting mention that you want your site to resemble the referenced site. As someone mentioned you can do that on sites like elance, odesk, or scriptlance.

I don't see anything special on that site - definitely, I couldn't recognize any CMS.

HTML is mandatory for any web site - without html there is no website

What I see is some simple HTML + flash.

LOL I realize HTML is mandatory for any site. I meant was it just a simple HTML + Flash site, or any of the CMS that I mentioned. Got it now though.

If this is simple to duplicate this site, how much is it worth for someone to do?

And a tad bit of Javascript. I think you could make something very similar with a CMS, though.

    Which CMS would be better?
I'd like to place hundreds, perhaps eventually thousands of images of my paintings on the site.

It wouldn't really matter which one you used, I would think, because technically you won't be using it in the strict CMS sense, anyway. It would definitely save you some coding time, though, although there would definitely be some customizing to be done, obviously. There is a carousel plug-in that would take care of the flash part, and a text widget could be used in the sidebar to display the image.

Oh, I see... the typical mistake

You don't really want (because you don't NEED!) to copy that site.
You should have asked from the very beginning exactly what you wrote in this post:

What kind of CMS or other solution (gallery script an/or gallery and ecommerce) would you recommend?

This is the question you wanted to ask...
(whether it's gallery or ecommerce script it will depend on the goal of your site)

Ahhh... that is different. I thought he was really impressed with the site referenced in the OP and actually wanted to re-create it as closely as possible.

If you just want to re-create certain features of the site mentioned in the OP, then you have a lot of options.

No, I'd like to steal it actually.

See, many of the pieces of art on that site I created. I used to paint for the owner. The owner of the site, Jay Andre, stole my domain name and registered it himself. This was a few years back, and redemption has been on my mind since.

Besides, I don't sell on eBay anymore so I need my own website. I like that one, so I figure an eye for an eye

Oh, I see now said the blind man. Then you have 2 options: hire someone to do the coding for you from the ground up, or hire a 'black hat' to actually clone the site.

If you are looking to create a site that requires more than basic knowledge of blogging software than unless you have taken courses on Web design you would have to outsource this project to a professional.

You could create something similar with a blog I suppose, but you are best sticking with outsourcing the project if you want a professional looking site like that.

    Then good luck!

P.S. It is my belief that living for years with the idea of revenge on our mind can poison the whole life...

It's not just about revenge. I mean, the whole business model was my idea. The domain name was my idea.... everything. He took all my ideas and beat me to the punch. I did all the behind-the-scenes work. He ran with my ideas.

But the whole point is that I'm doing my own thing now, and this is the next step I'd like to take (with the website). I just happen to like that design and wouldn't mind using something similar.

It's no longer about revenge. I just want my little space carved out on the web.

CMS is definitely the easiest and quickest way, imo. I would start by searching for gallery and portfolio themes. There are a lot of them that look just as nice and even better.

That's what I was thinking. Just checking here to see if others had suggestions.

So I'm curious now what this site would cost to build using HTML/Flash/Javascript which seems to be what the referenced site was built with.

Anyone have a clue what it would cost?

Depending on who is doing it, could be anything from $50 to $1,000. And no guarantee in either case...

I'd consider the way suggested by Bradley above.
