Need a Wordpress Theme

I am building niche sites and I am using free themes. The issue that I am having is that it takes me hours to almost a day to find a good theme. This is really putting a hamper on my IM'ing...

I have thesis, but feel it's not quick enough to make these types of sites. I also have optimize press, but not really good for these types of sites.

I am looking for a theme that is a basic theme that you can do just the following:

1. Upload a header
2. Change background
3. Change color
4. Change layout

that's about it. I found a theme called affiliate theme that is banging, but I think to pricey for what I am doing. Does anyone know of a cheap or free theme that can do that?

I have been building for awhile I wish I knew coding good. I would have thought someone would make a theme that people can make affiliate sites quickly using basic customization. Just one theme for all sites.

If anyone knows coding I would love to talk about making a theme like this. I know exactly what to put on the theme that would make it a winner and we can outsell all the other themes. Just a basic theme that you can change layout, change color, change background, change header or header fonts... Make a killing.

The default TwentyTen that comes with every 3+ version:
    - change background - yes
    - change header - yes
    - change header fonts - it shouldn't be difficult at all

Not sure what do you mean by "changing layout" - 2010 has Page templates with and without sidebar.
    Changing color of what?

      Layout
      1, 2 , 3 column. Left sidebar, Right Sidebar

      Color
Background or widget boxes or header just some color options to make unique. Basic stuff.

As I said, TwentyTen has 1 column and 2 column.
And if it is not coded properly you don't want a left sidebar... it's not seo friendly!

I thought we already clarified the bg color - checkmark
For header you can change the image with a few clicks.

Not clear on widget boxes and color relation. Every widget box a different colour? That would look awful

Again: don't throw in a general "colour option" not mentioning the colour of WHAT?

Yeah I understand. I use only 2 column widget right sidebar for my sites. Color is not a huge thing, but sometimes you can change the background color of one widget box or the title of the side widget. I use a dab of color for matching of affiliate sites.

          Your pretty good at this.

I agree also with TwentyTen... I like it. The only thing is the header graphic is below the site name. I kinda don't like this. The only thing you can do is take it off. I wish it was at top including the site title.

      Thanks

Well, it's a relatively simple code change, and then just save it as a template for the next time.

Come on, Bradley... not allowed to say that without telling us the relatively
          simple code change.

          Cough up the goods, please...

          Ken

PS - The file and line number will suffice, for me at least.

Yeah! I am curious too. I like TwentyTen I just don't like the banner of trees at the top. When you try to take off it just shows a blank. I tried this theme in the past and I couldn't remove that big tacky header below your website title. If I use TwentyTen then I would have to do a customized banner to fill that spot and that will be an extra hour at least. So, What is your coding?

  • I'm pretty sure the theme I linked to is only a 2-column theme. You can switch which side, I'm sure, but I don't think 3-column is an option. If you're interested I would be happy to sign in to the dashboard and check it out, though.

Actually, you can upload any picture for the header and you have the tools there, inside wp-admin > theme options to crop your image to fit the header img space.

On the other hand: I just did it a few second ago - clicked on Remove header... Save options at the bottom and the img is gone. I don't understand why it doesn't work for you guys

I don't know I just tried to remove the banner, which it did, but when I went to look it just had the same space their with an image that looks like it's a broken image or something. I can't get it to completely remove it and only have the nav bar.

When I build a site I feel the header should be in the same box as the title of your site. All in one box. This TwentyTen theme breaks it up. So lets say the name of your site is "flowerstoyou.com" or something. Then it will show title at top then the banner below. You would have to create an image of some flowers or something to place in there. It's a huge spot. You can't even find advertising banners to place there.

My bad, guys. I wasn't following the thread, so I didn't see your response.

OK. So if I'm understanding you correctly, you don't want any image there, at all?

I don't know why Istvan's suggestion regarding removing the image didn't work for you, because it does for me, but I can modify the code for you, if you like.

Personally, I would create a custom banner with my blog name in it, and remove the text blog title on top and that annoying tagline on the right, but that's just me.

Let me know which you want, and I'll take care of it and send you the new code via PM.

@KenThompson - This is for you, as well. Which option are you wanting? If you can handle the code part yourself, this is what you're looking for:

      wp-content/themes/twentyten/header.php Lines 59-79

I personally have started using Arthemia. Once you get it set up, your posts just flow onto the page in a beautiful way. Plus, you can add pictures easily and it just looks right to me. That's my own opinion though. You can get it for free and use a guide found on Google (that's what I did), or you can pay for support and the theme.

Buy a premium theme with multiple color variations and options. You won't find that in a free theme. I have a few on my blog that are very customizable

Yeah! I believe that someone feels my pain out there and has created one of these themes. This is the scenario:

      1. You put the theme on your blog
      2. You upload your header or change font to make title of site look right
      3. You change background (a lot of themes do this)
      4. You choose either widget on left/right. 2 or 3 column
      5. You can edit some of the colors of the site... Widget box headings, or a few default color headers with your title in it.

That is not that difficult. Give me someone who knows code and I can show you how we can get rich on this theme selling it for 5 bucks...

  • This discussion has morphed a bit, but that's okay. That's the whole purpose of discussion.

The Gazette theme handles 1 through 4 right in the dashboard and, since Channel is a clone, I would assume it does, as well.

Gazette has 4 color schemes built in, I think it is, but if you want something else it's a bit harder. I change my color schemes by hand, but I've been working with this theme for so long I know where the file is already, so I just use search and replace.

Most widgets I've seen take on the color scheme set for the blog automatically, but I know of a few that you have to actually change the colors in the Widget's settings.

I understand what you are saying, though. You basically want a theme that has all these options on one page, and you browse for the pics and tick the radio button and choose your custom color scheme, and then it goes in and makes the changes for you automatically.

Instead of creating a single theme with this option, though, I would create a script or a small program that does it for any theme.

For easy on-the-fly layout changes you might consider a theme like FlexSqueeze at $127 or OptimizePress at $97, or even Socrates which is $47 for a single-site install.

Flexsqueeze is a bit more of a learning curve than the other two but gives you A LOT of customization and on-the-fly layout changes -- several color palettes and sophisticated layout options that can be swapped by clicking a button (literally).

Socrates is super-easy to implement. What is lacks that the other two have is squeeze page generation; if that's not important then you can save some $$.

Go with Socrates. Very flexible. Designed specifically for affiliate marketers. Created by Adsense master, Joel Comm.

Socrates does have squeeze page/sales page generation in the "Pages" section. Their home page has a 10 minute video covering its uses.

Cheap being a relative term, of course. :-)

It's not free or low cost but one of the best (for me) themes for making modifications is Builder from iThemes. You can create different layouts within one site and make changes to background, number of widgets and locations, and just about anything else you want.

What I like is being able to have different looking pages on a membership site so someone not logged in sees one layout and members can see another. And there doesn't seem to be a limit for the number of layouts you can create.
