TIP: Creating PDFs for free.
As you know, most ebooks and programs delivered today contain the content in a PDF. This stands for Portable Document Format, and many people have purchased add-ons applications or printer substitutes for their computers that a
llow them to create documents in PDF format. Fear not, fellow warriors, there is a free piece of software that can do this for you.
This will be also great for those of you on the PC platform that don't particularly like Microsoft...
The software is called Open Office Writer, which is part of the open office suite:
download: OpenOffice.org Downloads
You can download the entire Open Office suite from there, (It's in the green area near the top of the page) and installing is very simple.
It also gives you several benefits, beyond just creating PDFs.
* Open Office Writer includes a built in PDF producer
* Open Office Writer can be used to write very professional looking documents
* And... Open Office Writer can also load documents produced by Microsoft Word.
* So no matter what you use to write the document -- Open Office or Microsoft Office -- you can use Open Office Writer to produce a PDF quickly and accurately!
If you choose to not purchase Microsoft Office, you can save documents in Microsoft Office format, so the files are interchangeable with anyone using Microsoft Office.
On a PC, installation is pretty simple.
Once you have the program installed, creating a PDF is really easy.
Go to your start menu, select Open Office, and start Open Office Writer. Then load the document (a .DOC file if you wrote it with Microsoft Office). Then click File->Output As PDF.
THATS IT.
Simple as simple can be.
You will probably find the other programs in the Open Office suite useful as well. There are functions for most of what you need to do from a business standpoint.
Writer is a document editor with features like MS Word.
Calc is a spreadsheet application
Impress lets you make presentation documents (like MS Powerpoint)
Draw is a drawiing program
Base provides database functions (similar to Access).
All in all, well worth the download, even if you never use it for more than creating PDF files.
