How to Hire - Spec Wise.

I am curious about hiring people off of WF.

I did a job post that I was looking (graphically) for a new html sales page. The current page was a little light on graphics and wanted a new version to run an A/B test.

Anyway, I hired a couple people but was very disappointed in the results. A couple of them just changed the box around the testimonials and that was it. ("Ta-Da," mail us your money now).

I sent demo sites, said I wanted some checkboxes, better graphics outlining the modules in the course, etc, etc,. Even supplied some demo sites that I liked the look and feel.

So, my question is...Should I have posted this job somewhere else? Are there qualified people out there that I can just hire to knock out an HTML sales page (using existing copy?) OR am I barking up the wrong tree and just work on it myself?

Thanks for the insights. (FYI - not enough posts on my side to PM any responses).

The first question you have to ask yourself is "Did their changes improve results?"

If you got more sales, then they did their job.

In addition, please be aware of the fact that adding graphics may significantly reduce your sales.

Do you have specific reasons why you want to add more graphics?

That is a fair question Adwords, but no, the changing of a border did not change results. Just seemed like they were just phoning in the changes or were not really that qualified to begin with.

I agree on keeping graphics sparse (at least that is what has tested well for me). There are some good basic ways to show some lists (such as checkmarks, etc) that are not too distracting.

You might be better off just browsing through the "Work For Hire" section for graphics people.

Look at the person's portfolio -- that's critical. Find someone with a style you like and show them an example of what you're looking for.

You will often need to gently "guide" graphic designers. They want to make it look fancy (so they can add it to their portfolio), but what often sells best is clean, simple design.

Having been both freelancer and employer.

My advice is to be as specific as possible. One person's "vision" may be blurry to another. Also make sure you're hiring the right person. A HTML person is not always the best choice for graphics and vice versa.
