These exit pop ups are getting ridiculous

I was visiting a website and as I was leaving I was stopped by an exit pop up. Nothing new there as this is very common these days. However, once I said no to the first pop up another one came, then another and then another.

There were 4 exit pop ups. That's just way too many. For me, that is a complete turn off.

Agreed. Nothing worse then the dreaded multiple pop-up. I can live with one, but c'mon....multiple pop-ups? Another tip: only allow one pop-up every 24 hours (even 12 hours is ok) at most to your visitors if you have repeat traffic. It's really annoying to be shown the same pop if I come back to your site within an hour from the previous visit.

I don't like exit pop-ups, period. One, I may tolerate, if the site otherwise is noteworthy, but more than one and I'm gone for good!

Absolutely agree! Keep it to one and pay a few extra bucks to have someone create one that doesn't look so cookie-cutter.

One is my absolute limit. Any more and you've lost me as a potential customer.

Anyone who believes that exit pop-ups work in 2011 is kidding themselves. Perhaps they worked 10 years ago. Today, when an exit pop-up appears, users become wary and more determined to leave.

I couldn't agree more. For me personally, I would rather not work with/sell to people that really don't want what I am offering. More than likely they will refund or be a pain to deal with.... Not worth it in my opinion.

  • I think it's just the frequency with how many people are starting to use this 'tactic'. It used to be effective when only 1-2 people did it, but now "everyone" is trying to use it as the golden goose to 'increase' conversions, and instead it is just getting people annoyed.

I agree, however, I wonder if anyone has any qualitative data to indicate that in the long run it works. Usually, when I complain about a commercial, I have to say to myself that they wouldn't run it if it didn't work.

    Just curious I guess
