What Internet Marketing Myth Did You Fall For The Longest Before You Accepted The Truth?

Mine was ...
"You can get rich by pushing a button on a piece of computer software".

I realized it about a year and a half and $500 later! (Ouch)!

      Well, for the MOST part that is true, however, there are those niches where you can still throw up a quick 10 page site, add some adsense and sit back and passively let the income come in...truth be told I have an acid reflux site I built back in '05 that has gone untouched since then that makes daily click through income.

        Yea but, you still have to do some work to get traffic. How else will it ever get indexed or found by anyone?

    Rich people keep dying off in Nigeria, and their relatives want to send millions of dollars right to my bank account. Never could understand that one, but I couldn't live with myself if I took advantage of them. :confused:

        It works on greed. The scammers promise huge sums of money to people but keep asking for money from them to pay adminstration fees, and grease the palms of the powers that be etc. etc. When people fall for it they keep sending this money to the scammers thinking they're getting ever closer to receiving a massive windfall that doesn't exist and they're never going to get.

    That there are "secrets' and 'shortcuts' that are suddenly going to explode my online income with little effort or work on my part.

    I still find this myth attractive but after literally years I've finally accepted that the latest 'secret' is no substitute for hard work and building a solid foundation.

    It's more of an SEO myth than anything but...

    "Don't build links too fast... or else you will go into the Google Sandbox!"

    I laugh every time I see someone say that. If I could get a quarter every time that sentence is mentioned I would be sitting on a beach right now planning my latest launch with "the Google Sandbox" as product name!

      if yesterday site had 100 backlinks and overnight it will get 1000,
      what wll be in that situation?

        Google won't find all 1000 backlinks in 24 hours. Even if it found 25% of them within 24 hours you would just end up dancing--but you wouldn't go to some mythological sandbox.

    I was lucky I guess. I never really fell for any of the hype. But I got in very early and was hyper-focused on pushing my brand and my products. I will say though, it's a much tougher game now than it used to be. All the rules have changed and Google now runs the show. Hell, Google wasn't even born when I got in! Back then you could buy keywords for a penny and there was very little competition. Now people are arguing over whether or not you should buy links or have too many too soon etc. - Sometimes I think the best approach to this stuff these days is just to close your eyes and take off running. If you run off a cliff, you know you got it wrong. :p (kidding of course).

    That purchasing courses, ebooks, memberships, etc, and reading and going through them all and not doing ANYTHING was going to make IM'ing my new career and replace my current job.
