How do I get my site listed on DMOZ?

I've looked over their website and submitted a few sites and can never get them indexed.
Any suggestions? Has anyone here been successful?

Thanks,
K

The easiest way is to become friends with an editor that is assigned to your category.
Other than that, it is a guessing game. You can have the best content in the world an not get listed.

Most people doing SEO feel that DMOZ is not relevant anymore. Few people know about it, fewer use it. Google gives it a high page rank most likely for historical reasons. I have one site listed with them going back ten years. Big deal. Don't waste your time.

If you get the right editor for DMOZ, all you do is pay him/her. Numerous people have told me that certain ones take bribes. Other than that, it really isn't worth trying.

If your site is new with little traffic I think they won't accept your request for listing.

DMOZ really depends on the category, the editor, and your website. Some categories are impossible. Some niches are not covered at all. It may take 2 -to- six months, or longer, or never. It tends to be a black hole. It seems there is no recourse, no way to get any status updates, but worth a bit of effort if you get in.

You submit your site and then wait... and wait... and wait... and wait. Its very plausible that you could actually die before your site is included.

    Or....

You buy a domain name that is already listed in the directory. Many optimizers do this to build a network of sites to generate backlinks on.

    Or....

You can find an editor or apply to become one yourself and hope for the best. Most like you are going to end up waiting... and waiting... and waiting some more.

I submitted a site three years ago. Nothing. Don't waste any cycles on this. I do however like the idea of buying a domain listed in DMOZ and using it for links. Nice!

DMOZ really isn't worth the effort. A lot of the editors are corrupt, and it's just a pain in the ass to get listed. There's a moderate sized forum on which I've done a lot of work - it has ~150,000 posts, 1.5k members, and about 500 uniques a day. We submitted the website to DMOZ like two years ago and haven't gotten anything.

This is a creative writing forum that has a -ton- of content and over 15,000 indexed pages. One of our competitors that just came on the scene in in 2009 got listed within a couple months of being around. At the time, they had maybe 20k posts, less than 1k indexed pages, and almost no backlinks. What they did have, however, as a ton of capital to spend.

You sure they just didn't find a domain name that was already included in the directory?

Hi Guys, thanks for the info in here, I was beginning to think it was just me, I have submitted a load of sites to DMOZ and nothing so far.
It would be great to know for sure that there is less weight to this as there seems to be a lot of disagreement out there as to how much weight the DMOZ directory has in search engines.

If it is corrupt and next to impossible to get your site listed without the "Big Brown Envelope" then there should be no weight given at all to such an organisation, but I suppose there are a lot of things out there which are not fair, this is just another ass kicker.

    Clive.

Everything in SEO is relative. You can rank for competitive keywords without a DMOZ listing. It is possible and I've done it myself. There are plenty of links out there ripe for the taking that may even more powerful than a link from DMOZ, especially once you consider relevancy.

        Hi,

        Thanks for the reply.

I agree its all relative, yes you can rank without the DMOZ of course and there is a crap load of sources out there more powerful than the DMOZ.

I was merely asking why if Google, Bing, Yahoo or any other search engines puts weight on the DMOZ if it is inherently, inept, corrupt or not functioning the way it supposed to do as a directory.

Perhaps there is not as much weight to this directory given as there were previously, does anyone have evidence to substantiate this?

And if it takes a bribe to some moderator to get your site listed why is there any weight whatsoever put into this directory?

        Regards,

        Clive.

Well there isn't exactly any PROOF that some of the editors are getting paid to approve your listing. It's something the DMOZ community as a whole tries to fight, but obviously some unscrupulous editors slip through.

The web continues to give the directory weight because setting aside the rumors of unscrupulous behavior it is still a trusted site on the internet.

You will rarely find crap sites listed in there. I don't have the time to look under every category, but I would assume that you won't find many MFA or thin affiliate sites within the directory.

It's also very old, which so the credibility of the directory gets stronger as the years go by.

Not trying to argue with you, but rather trying to explain exactly why getting a link from DMOZ is considered a big effing deal.

I've tried using DMOZ submitting some of my websites too, but never get a response from them either. I've given up on them myself and turined my business elsewhere and submit my sites to other directories (btw, I find directory submitters like Directory Maximizer to be pretty useful at getting picked up by various directories on the net, though it is a little pricy). Though it definitely is a shame that potientially good systems like DMOZ tend to be useless for the average internet marketer like you and me. Ah well, maybe it is time for a competitor directory to "steal the show" from DMOZ.
