Default 2 Blogs or more on one domain? Bad Idea?

I'm not even sure it's possible, but is it a bad idea to have two blogs on one domain? Perhaps having the second blog on a subdomain?

Would I be penalized for this?

You won't get penalized unless you are doing Black hat stuff.

It's ok to have few blogs on a same domain and I'm doing that too. Don't worry too much

As long as you don't cross link them all together. I've had up to 10 blogs on one domain before. For example Wordpress MU, like on wordpress.com has millions.

I have 2 blogs on 1 domain and it does quite well.
You wont get penalized but you have to update often.

One of the sites I recently sold had 5 blogs
all linking to each other.

There is nothing to worry about.

2 is no problem. 200 starts to look a little 'gamey'.

Nothing wrong with 2 blogs on the same domain, as far as I can tell - as long as you work out the SEO, directories etc. properly.

I know Jeff Johnson (of Free SEOBLOG fame), always advises that you should not have more than two blogs on a domain. Stick to two and you should have no problems.

It depends on how you're running them. If you use folders...

mydomain.com/blog1
mydomain.com/blog2
mydomain.com/blog3
etc...

...this is just like they're on the same domain so far as Google is concerned. Any links are considered internal site linking and weighed as such.

But, if you use subdomains like so...

blog1.mydomain.com
blog2.mydomain.com
blog3.mydomain.com
etc...

These are considered separate domains by Google and thus any links are considered external links, including linking back to the root domain. If you have a lot of subdomains (100+) with the objective of passing link juice to the root domain or that have thin, duplicate or generated content you can encounter penalties.

EDIT

One additional thing. Multiple WordPress installs put a strain on a server. If you get over about 50 installs of WP on a shared server account you may find your account suspended because of heavy CPU usage. If you want to have a lot of WordPress installs, look into using WPMU.
