How do you learn to pick a good out source person the first time?

Where can you learn "how" to pick the right out sourcers? We are new IMers and not very seasoned. We have a market of offline customers (in a micro niche) that want our help but some of the help they want is too technical for us and we would like to out source some of the different marketing techniques too.

We have seen Warriors who sell offline business marketing courses but I think what we need is an expert that can teach us how to pick qualified out source persons.

Tech Example: a customer that wants his music for sale on a new website and wants visitors to be able to listen but not record (for free) his music. They will be able to buy it as a down loadable mp3, ring tone, etc. (Outsource to a tech?)

Marketing example: a customer wants us to help him promote him and his music group in the hip hop and rap community chat rooms and through social media. (How do you find a qualified out source for social media, etc?)

What is the criteria to find the right out source for these different areas without getting burned? There are several artists waiting for our help and we want to find good outsourcing to make sure we do this right with the first guy.Having zero experience in out sourcing, it would be really dumb to just go hire someone that says he can do it.

Some of the freelancer sites like elance, odesk, rentacoder provide track records of freelancers previous jobs (Though some get friends to fake reviews) odesk installs an app that allows you to see your contractors screen.

There are outsourse training/coaching programs, the best known may be replacemyself.com by John Jonas, he also provides a library of training videos to train your outsourcers common tasks. Jonas prefers hiring people in the Philippines for roughly $450/mo.

A couple of other outsource training products:
outsourceweekly.com, outsourcemethod.com (Don't know if these are completely up to date)

There's a lot of grumbling about outsourcers, some recommend hiring 2 independent workers at first, firing the less productive one at some later stage.

Be sure to work with someone who has good feedback or testimonials.

Sites like elance and odesk will help keep you safe against low quality work.

  • Ask for references and samples. If they have a project portfolio, then so much the better as you will be able to see what they can do.

Headhunting is never really easy, whether the job is outsourced or not. Ideally you should already have an established business process before you outsource. If you do not have that, I would suggest that you do research on what you are about to outsource so you at least have an idea how it can be done.
