Just so confused as to where I'm going with this?

OK, I have learnt all about Wordpress so I can make my own sites.
I have some SEO knowledge and tried to make my sites with content.

I get to 3rd in Google.
But no1 in google is an articlebased obvious AM link.

What can you do against that?

I spent all that time doing my own web site and someone comes along with a half page story on how he conquered my topic using his Affiliate link in his article.

What am I doing wrong?
