    Money is EVERYTHING.

With money you can buy a house
With money you can buy a nice car
With money you can buy you can help the needy
With money you can put food on the table
With money you can go on vacations

People like to say that money is the root of all evil and it is not.

      This is often misquoted.

The original phrase was "The love of money is the root of all evil"

      Big difference.

Loving money as an end in itself is a fool's paradise. The only benefit of money is what it can help you to achieve.

And I believe the ultimate benefit is freedom.

As Bob Dylan said "A man is successful if he can get up in the morning and go to bed at night and in between do exactly as he wants."

The only alteration I'd make to the bard's wise observation is that it's sometimes important to be able to do what you want during the night as well.

EDIT: Brian, you just beat me to it with the "love" correction.

Got these quick fingers from all that bass playing!

TOM: I did not intend to imply that you don't understand. I was just adding my own thoughts on the "money is the root of all evil" comment. I've heard that verse misquoted by religious zealots for years as their excuse for why they are dead broke all the time.

I don't doubt that you understand the constructive and destructive power of money. That wasn't my intent at all.

I think your story is amazing and I appreciate you sharing it.

Money is the route of all evil.
    Evil is live spelled backwards.

If you're going with the biblical reference ... "LOVE of money is the root of all evil." The admonition is to not let money become your master but your servant.

And in the same book, you will find "... but money answereth all things. "

Money is a tool. Hammers can build. Hammers can also destroy.

I heard a comedian recently who said:

"People say money can't buy you happiness. Ok... but it can buy you a wave runner! Have you ever seen anyone on a wave runner that didn't look happy?"

OK...it was simply an off the top of my head, tongue in cheek way of alluding to the fact that in today's western developed society it seems impossible to live without a decent amount of money.

Trust me I understand both the constructive and destructive power of it.

I'm not going to recount it all here but if you doubt it read my post in the "if you only had one year to live" thread.

An example from my own life:

Destructive: poverty leads people to commit terrible acts.
Constructive: wealth enabled me to track down and buy back my lifelong best friends 17 year old daughter from sex slavery in Kiev...

        Thats exactly right.

Money does not buy you happiness. Money gives you the resources you need to be able to enjoy life. Money is a tool. If you can turn this tool into an auto ATM then your laughing.

One other thing to consider when operating any kind of business. Never ever focus on making money from your customers alone. Always focus on providing the customer with the best value that you can in return for a sum of money!

To me money is just a by-product of being successful.

  • It's hard to live without money, that's for sure.

You can give great gifts even if you don't have any money, though. The best things in life truly are free.

Money is always said to be the answer to most thing. Having it will make most of your needs or problems to be solved

      Just my 2 cents ....

It's not so much that it "solves" most of your problems. You simply trade problems.

As just one example: Instead of the problem being "I can't afford that", it becomes, "How do I buy this and take the deduction?"

  • I agree that money is not everything. For me, family comes first as I'm sure a lot of us will agree.

But also, money is a great tool that many things become possible with.

    Here's a great example:

I was Christmas shopping in a mall and it was very cold. I was bit worried since I didn't make much this year and was very happy I set my Christmas money aside earlier.

I past by this woman and little girl not more than 5 years old. I was frozen, but the cold didn't seem to bother them much. They were sitting down on a cement step holding a sign that read "Homeless Please Help".

I past them and gave them a dollar at first. Rationalizing that I didn't have much myself and I gave what I thought I could afford.

I went about my Holiday shopping, all the while thinking "It's not right. No child should be homeless." It kept nagging at my heart. Just then a thought came to mind and I acted on it. The thought was "She won't have anything for Christmas. Where will Santa be for her"?

I turned into a Kaybee toys and bought a $12 Barbie doll. Not much, I know. But I really couldn't afford much more, honestly.

I rushed back to the woman and little girl, all the while praying, "Please God, let them still be there".

I kneeled down next to the woman, who was in her early thirties, and said, and this is word for word. I won't forget it very soon.

"Hi, I was talking to a certian man with a white beard and he said that he wanted her to have this for Christmas". And I covertly handed her the bag with Barbie inside. I would have wrapped it first but couldn't find one of those wrapping places in a hurry.

I reached into my pocket and gave the woman a $10 bill, telling her and truly wishing that it could be more.

While I was doing this, her eyes welled up in tears and she thanked me three or four times whole heartedly as well as three "God Bless You" 's.
Then, she wished me a Merry Christmas. I smiled and said Merry Christmas back and added, "take care".

I stood and walked on with a happiness in my heart that couldn't be replaced. After about forty feet or so I turned to see this woman holding the bag with Barbie uncovered and showing it to the little blonde girl.

I walked a bit further and turned again to see both her and her daughter looking at me. I smiled, and kept walking.

I hope that she told that little girl I was Santa's helper or something like that.

If I see this woman and her child again. I will buy them something to keep warm. I don't know what I can do more than that.

I beg everyone, to give what they can afford. I know that the ression has put a large dent into many a person's pockets but, if all you can afford is .50 or $1 please give what you can. It really does add up.

  • Money, or anything else is not anything - it simply *is*. Nothing has any meaning other than what we attach to it.

That's really something difficult to think of though, admittedly I have tried to do so.

Many times you simply can't help it a lot on not attaching any emotions to money the first place. Possibly nearly impossible to NOT attach any emotions.

Anyone heard of more money more problems!? most people seem to think that money will solve everything and they will have no more problems. Trust me you will have just as many problems and money will not solve them! Its great to work hard and earn something but you need to be content with what you have and be grateful if you get more and absolutely give back the more you get! Like it was stated above the Love of money can lead to all kinds of evil and trouble for you! be careful!

Money can't buy me happiness? Maybe not, but it can sure buy me a cruise! And I'm pretty happy when I'm on a cruise ship!
