Ok so I had some really awesome keywords that have great monthly and daily searches but then when I checked those keywords with my competition I figured there was no real way I could outrank them without doing some serious hard work which I don't neccassarily have that much time for.

Sooo, I'm back now at the drawing board and trying to find lesser keywords that I may be able to rank for and that still have decent monthly and daily searches (albeit, not quite as many). However, I was doing my research and I was wondering a few things if anyone could please help to clarify as I am at a loss.

Let's say for example's sake that I researched the keyword phrase 'buy cheese online'

Lets say that this exact keyword phrase is already highly competitive and has really good monthly traffic exceeding 1000.

So instead of targeting 'buy cheese online', say that instead I targeted 'buy cottage cheese online'. Would targeting 'buy cottage cheese online' be a good idea or a bad idea beings as it is easy to rank for (low competition), yet the monthly search traffic is below 1000?

This is where I'm getting caught up at because I'm finding all kinds of really great buyer keywords with great traffic but the competition seems really steep - whereas I know I could rank quite easily with a more targeted, long-tail keyword that has little monthly traffic. I'm just not sure which is more worth the risk?

Any thoughts?

You might find it easier to have a bunch of sites with lower traffic you can rank well for instead of one with higher traffic you have to work at. It's a lot easier to be a big fish in a small pond.

This is very true and I've slowly been succumbing too that haha - I'm just concerned that I'll make a ton of little mini sites and make nothing out of them beings as they get so little traffic I just don't want to waste my time when their could be other potentially profitable niches that are fairly easy to rank for (If only I could find those little buggers, everything seems to be taken and ranked for already!!)

This is a very common tactic and it works well, especially if you have a lot of sites and don't want to focus on just one. You can nail hundreds or even thousands of small serps and a few hits a day for each will add up to big traffic. The only problem you have is targeting - are all of the people searching these terms going to be interested in the final target (your page)? If not then you may be wasting your time. But often times this does work well and is much easier than trying to nail serps with tens of thousands of professionals to compete with.

So in a nutshell (correct me if I'm wrong) are you telling me that, as a beginner (been doing this for 2 years now but still no payout so in my eyes I'm still a beginner) I ought to focus on targeting the lower hanging fruit, sacrifice some traffic in the process but go for keywords that are easier to rank for and build several of these types of sites - that I may have a chance of being rather successful? PLUS - I certainly intend on marketing right, building a great site and monetizing/optimizing, all that good stuff - so I know that I could rank well - the ONLY issue I'm facing is the darned competition for some of the better/higher searched for terms. Am I close? haha...

Another thing - what happens if you find a keyword with local monthly searches in excess of 8000 but $0.00 for CPC?? Is this some 'too-good-to-be-true' hidden gem, or a waste of time??

    Thanks!

Sorry, they just keep coming to me but I'm also going to assume that if I'm targeting a keyword phrase and I check my competition for the keyword phrase I'm using in Google and in the top 10 is the exact .com affiliate site that your an affiliate for - that term would be a bad idea to shoot for? Cuz if so, that goes for just about all of my keywords here, lol....

    *sighh.... =/

I think you should concentrate on promoting your sites instead of going through the keyword research again and again, it is a waste of time. You should find a better technique to beat your competition and don't hesitate to take help from WSOs.

Staying too long on the basics might give you a solid base but it can also ruin your time which you should be spending in more quality work for your website.

One day, you will beat your competition and reap what you sow, but low volume keywords may not give you what you want even on top of SERPs. And remember google keyword tool is not always correct when it comes to volume. Always use the 'Exact' option while looking for keywords in google keyword tool, just to be near to the real volume.
